Here is one of the first looks at Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken, the film about WWII survivor Louie Zamperini who could not be broken.

Sasha Stone has been around the Oscar scene since 1999. Almost everything on this website is her fault.
I have to admit, I am disappointed that the author chose to let Angelina Jolie direct this movie. Why not a class act like Kathryn Bigelow? Sadly, Jolie emotes extreme narcissism and seems incapable of taking a simple photograph with her crew without looking like an insecure mannequin. To me, she personifies something less than the story deserves. I will however, see the move for Laura and the rest of the POW’s.
I also have to agree about Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt being overrated. I mean just her recent interview made me rolls my eyes at her. I mean the whole shtick of ” I never liked acting, I am a shy person, I feel uncomfortable on camera, I will quit acting” is all Oscar campaigning BS. This is coming from a woman who gone naked and shot dozens of vulgar sex scenes in her movies, a woman who has been campaigning hard for her movie even before the filming even started, a woman who does non-stop interviews, photos-shoots, and is one of the most papped celebrities in the world. I mean give me a break, who is she kidding ? I find her to be fake at times.
Jolie has been in some good or great movies. George Wallace, Gia, Changeling, A Mighty Heart (maybe her best), Girl Interrupted, Wanted and cases can be made for Salt and Sky Captain. I’m not saying she’s the best actress ever, or even picks the smartest projects, but she hasn’t been in so many horrendous movies as of late to the point it would deter her skills as a director. Sort of like Ben Affleck, who she was compared to in star power recently on here. She had a promising, even amazing, start. Faltered during the new century and is now trying to rebrand herself with better roles and directing movies. That’s something I can admire.
It looks like a Disney movie. It doesn’t feel…. gritty enough to be an “Oscar movie”. Not to say it won’t be good. See, we are doing it already. It’s coming in with huge expectations and we are trying to find things wrong with it.
This boy won’t get nominated for Best Actor. Too many actors with great performances(Cumberbatch, Redmanye, Carell, Keaton,Affleck, Fiennes,Issac) are already in the race for it. Same with directing. I think Jolie will miss out on the directing nom too and maybe try again with By the Sea.
Jesus Christ, what would you consider to be a “great” Angelina Jolie film?
Only things that come to mind are Girl, Interrupted and Changeling, and they could hardly be considered “great”
I number of films including this one currently say “voting in progress” on the BFCA site, so perhaps we’ll have some early indication scores in the next day or so…
“If Angelina Jolie has NEVER starred in a good film, what makes anyone think she can direct one?”
First of all, #rude.
Second, yes she has.

I will enjoy the film for Garrett Hedlund. I’ve had a soft spot for him ever since Tron: Legacy. I agree with the Pearl Harbor vibe. I read a comment the other day about this being 2014’s War Horse and I have to agree. Whether the film is really that great it will probably be nominated, given the hype, the subject matter, the famous people involved (Jolie, Deakins, Coens) yeah I would pretty surprised if it wasn’t nominated. It would really have to suck for it not to be.
Lurker,
Desplat is the definition of overdue. People, just check his filmography and drool! If Unbroken were to get only 1 Oscar, it should definitely be Best Score, and I’m not afraid to declare that sound unheard.
desplat gushing about this movie, some people here will eat humble pie this movie will be better awesome

oh my gosh now that you say it… it does have a similar look. Idk, I hate to get sucked into the Oscar cycle and judge this movie before seeing it, it just doesn’t strike me as anything extraordinary. Though it could very easily have “consensus” written all over it.
Christophe, yes! I’ve been trying to put my finger on what this movie looks like/reminds me of and it’s Pearl Harbor. That’s not meant to be an insult (well maybe a tiny bit) toward Unbroken.
I’m getting a Pearl Harbor vibe from this, which doesn’t bode well Oscar-wise, but I enjoyed Pearl Harbor very much (the film, not the actual event) so to me it’s All Good!
