If Boyhood was the best picture of the year then this was a weak year. As much of a gimmick movie as The Artist was.
It is actually very interesting to see Marion pop up here– NYFCC has never awarded her before, not even for La môme!
I just wonder, now that the New York Film Critics Circle picked Boyhood, will the Los Angeles Film Critics want to pick Birdman since New York didn’t. I feel like the love should be shared amongs a few films. It would be boring if Boyhood goes on to win everything, a la Argo and The Artist did.
Although, I’m still hoping for the Los Angeles Film Critics to pick Inherent Vice. 🙂
I just can’t with Arquette winning.
Stergios,
I love your comments I see around the web about Marion Cotillard.
Thanks, Bryce. 😀

I don’t care that much for Boyhood. Linklater has made a number of better films. Wes Anderson should have won Best Director. The real magic of The Grand Budapest Hotel is in its direction and the way so many terrific elements come together. The script, while quite good, is relatively middling in the Anderson catalog.
@ NICK JOHNSON Feel free to love me man!
I love Linklater’s Before films, but Boyhood really isn’t remarkable. I’m just gonna have to get use to it winning.
What a shitty year this is.
“Boyhood” is still my #1, but I’m not actually that crazy about it. The “Before” movies are some of the best American films to be made in the last 20 years. And “Dazed & Confused” is my single favorite coming-of-age movie (or, as Tarantino put it, “hang-out movie”) of all time. So I’d be thrilled for Linklater. But much more lukewarm on “Boyhood” than others are. “Birdman” is the other very interesting one, and it is one that will last and will age well. But it falls short of greatness with its tendency to fall back on absurdity and comedy rather than rise to profundity as it occasionally seems like it wants to. There just hasn’t been anything that’s really lifted me up or motivated me to root for something this year.
I’m most looking forward to “Inherent Vice.” But also “Selma,” “Foxcatcher,” and “A Most Violent Year.” Still, generally, so dull. What a huge change from the last two years.
You gotta love Stergios.
Finally! YES! YES! YES! My God, YES!!!!!! I’m so damn happy about watching THE GREATEST ACTRESS OF ALL TIME, THE ONE AND ONLY MARION COTILLARD, winning for the New York Film Critics for her insuperable performances as Sandra Bya in Two Days, One Night and as Ewa Cyluska in The Immigrant!!! It fills me with joy and excitement. She should sweep all the awards with either of her immensely powerful and hauntingly beautiful performances. Any list of Best Actress contenders would look empty without the incomparable Marion Cotillard of either The Immigrant or Two Days, One Night in the lead. Both performances should be considered among the 10 greatest performances ever put on film. She gave the absolute best (Two Days, One Night) and the absolute second best female performance (The Immigrant) at the same year. I’ll be more than thrilled to watch her win a second Oscar for either. I would really love to watch Julianne Moore receiving at some point finally her long overdue Oscar trophy. She’s clearly phenomenal and worthy of an Oscar win in “Still Alice” (as always) and having seen recently “Maps to the stars”, I’m completely in awe of her raw, wild, tremendous work as Havana Segrand. But if there’s one performance that deserves the Best Actress Oscar win this year no matter what is without a hint of doubt the one the brilliant Marion Cotillard delivers in Dardennes’ latest masterpiece Two Days, One Night. Worthy of an Oscar to say the least. The second one would be Marion Cotillard’s outstanding performance in The Immigrant. Personally, I’m rooting for both but since only one can make the cut so that she avoids split voting with herself, I’d give a slight edge to her phenomenal turn in Two Days, One Night. Marion Cotillard’s performance as Sandra in the latest Dardennes Brothers masterpiece is the kind of performance that needs to be seen to be truly believed. There’s no way to overhype her work there, trust me. The whole theatre was in tears throughout the screening I saw for Two Days, One Night. You rarely get to watch such a towering performance from an actor / actress in your entire life. With her unmatched work in this film, you feel like she’s pushing acting to a whole another level. She makes you feel the deepest and most complex emotions for a woman who has to fight against depression and the possibility of losing her job at the same time. Acting doesn’t get any better. But the second greatest female performance of the year, as I’ve already said and a performance that deserves to be put among the finest achievements in the history of acting ever, is her bigger than life performance as a Polish immigrant who lands at Ellis Island, New York in 1921 in The Immigrant. It’s such a monumental achievement, such a towering combination of unlimited emotional depth and jaw-dropping technical skills, such a groundbreaking piece of brave and soul-shredding acting that it will definitely be used as a subject of study in drama classes for any aspiring actor / actress as long as this world keeps on turning. It’s a performance THAT astonishing. Watching Marion Cotillard transform into her each new role is like an otherwordly experience. She inhabits her every character so completely it ends up extremely scary. It doesn’t feel like a performance at all. You find yourself thinking you’re watching the most crucial parts of a person’s existence unfolding in front of your eyes. No-holds-barred, Cotillard dares to abandon herself into a role in a way no actress in the history of cinema can claim she did. Body and soul, she always gives her all. It’s always a marvel to watch, an unforgettable tour de force, a performance for the ages. She’s so immensely talented and gave such an awe-inspiring performance in both Two Days, One Night and The Immigrant this year (and I’m so glad so many people acknowledge her tremendous work there and the film itself since May, which is really brilliant) that it’s disheartening even to think of the possibility of her being snubbed again. The buzz she should take within the next few months should be endless. I think that after the criminal snubs for Rust and bone, Nine and Inception (among the endless list of others), there will be an uproar if she won’t be even nominated. She has to score her second win this year and if not for that at least a ridiculously overdue second Oscar nomination. Really, Academy voters shouldn’t underestimate the intelligence and knowledge of their viewers, especially the cinephile community that much, because losing their respect is a MAJOR LOSS, trust me. AND THE OSCARS WILL SUFFER THAT MAJOR LOSS FOR SURE IF A GENIUS LIKE MARION COTILLARD IS SNUBBED AGAIN AFTER PUTTING OUT CONSISTENTLY BRILLIANT AND OSCAR-WORTHY PERFORMANCES FOR SEVEN YEARS IN A ROW SINCE HER WIN AND IN FACT FROM THE VERY BEGINNING OF HER LEGENDARY CAREER.
@Murtaza: First, when you say “people like you,” I’m guessing you mean liberals? Second, not liking a certain movie (whatever its intentions) doesn’t mean you disagree with its message. I happen to think Deliver Us From Evil was the better doc of 2006, so if you disagree, should I assume you’re in favor of priest molesting kids? Also, I had already heard everything about global warming Gore discussed in the film, so, nothing new for me. Third, your comment makes no sense.
The reason I haven’t been predicting Spall is because the inevitable Redmayne and Cumbie noms. I still don’t think he is getting nominated unless one of them or Oyelowo gets snubbed. First winning Cannes and now this. Good for him. Also Marion Cotillard and The Immigrant…………….Hell yeah! Really surprised Birdman got shut out. Boyhood and Linklater winning was just as I predicted.
No way is Citizen Four merely this years’ Inconvenient Truth! Laura Poitras is very careful in laying out the pieces of the puzzle and she avoids all sensationalist clichés although (given the sensational nature of the topic) she could EASILY have done that. I think it’s a smart film that doesn’t pander to the lowest common denominator, but is instead concerned with telling the story in a suitably cool, detached manner, which might turn some people off, but serves the material very well. That’s exactly why the movie convincingly succeeds in humanizing Snowden because it’s not trying too hard (or trying at all) to make us like him. And I think it’s masterfully executed in the sense that it feels incredibly urgent and pulsating despite the detachment of its overall tone.
Minor quibble: You are left with a nagging doubt as to whether Poitras ought to have been more critical of Snowden and his Russian exile for example, but then again, if she wanted this film to come to life she had to do it on terms that respected his need for personal security and the breaking of the story.
I am perfectly content about the NYFCA’s choices this year.
While I would have liked to have seen Ethan Hawke mentioned as BSA for “Boyhood”, JK Simmons for “Whiplash” seems like an inspired choice. He’s an actor who has really paid his dues in this industry. Nice to see him recognized.
I was a bit surprised by Timothy Spall’s win; really looking forward to seeing “Mr. Turner” now.
On another note entirely, I went to the Swedish film “Force Majeure” this weekend. What a GREAT movie! Go see it. It’s a very disturbing look at a marital relationship gone haywire. I didn’t know what to expect, but the audience here in Portland, Oregon was ecstatic at the end. It contains great performances by the two leads.
Jesus: I don’t agree with QT much, but, he was right about SUNSHINE.
And, just because that is what the film has been “about” – doesn’t necessarily mean it was the correct choice. Like I wrote, I wasn’t all that impressed by the LEGO MOVIE even before that last scene. The ending neither made me want to re-think the whole movie, nor, did it satisfy on its own (and, I’m hardly the only one who disliked it. I read more than one review that said LEGO was a great movie except for that ending).
Joes, critizicing the ending of The LEGO Movie, is like criticizing the ending of Danny Boyle’s Sunshine (something Tarantino did): NOT getting what the film is about, and has been about, since its very first frame.
LAFC is a better option for Birdman, in my opinion… but I think Boyhood might sweep on the important critic circles…
I think the end game might be The Theory of Everything – Linklater – Redmayne – Moore – Simmons – Arquette, with a Picture / Director split and both films earning an acting award.
Not an auspicious start for Princess Kaguya. It needs all the precursor support it can get, especially from the critics, if it is to have any hope in upsetting Lego Movie.
@ Free
it’s because of people like you global warming is an issue who think a documentary like AIT was a boring geography class.
Boyhood will be the default choice until the end of the race. Birdman is too sharp for the softy critics.
Ooh, completely agree about Inconvenient Truth. That was like sitting through the most boring geography class, and I LIKE Gore.
IDA is a great choice. It shouldn’t just be ghetto-ized as a “Foreign” film, either.
I still don’t get the adoration for THE LEGO MOVIE. After all the hype, it fell largely flat for me (and I did see it on the big screen). And, that ending wrecks much of the goodwill in the rest of the movie.
RE: Bryce Forestieri “CITIZENFOUR.Question: Do you learn anything new from that documentary if you closely follow the news like a responsible citizen? Is it great documentary filmmaking? Is it illuminating? ”
FULL agree, Bryce! CITIZENFOUR is the INCONVENIENT TRUTH of this year’s awards circuit. A very important topic, but only an above average MOVIE. The award is supposed to be “Best Documentary” not “Best Topic”. If you had watched the several fine PBS Frontline documentaries on the subject, you would have found only a few morsels of “new” revelations in CITIZENFOUR. (note: they are available to watch on the PBS website)
Biggest shock to me is nothing for Birdman. The Imitation Game and Theory of Everything aren’t the sort of movies that get awards from the NYFCC even though they are major Oscar contenders so it’s not surprising that they got nothing.
Nolan for me, even though it’s not his best film…
I don’t think Linklater is an undeserving winner, but no one comes close to Alejandro for me.
After I saw Boyhood on April 25 I said it was the best film of the decade, still feel so . Since Unbroken based on the reviews is not that good. Selma which I have not seen seems to be the only film that can beat Boyhood.
I have been tweeting about them but the obligatory Awards Daily comment…
Couldn’t be more happier for Boyhood and The Immigrant. Some great surprises this year. Yaay for Cotillard, Arquette and Linklater.
LC, if not Linklater for Director, who?
Honestly, I see a lot of this as sweet vindication for the unfair snubbing of Before Midnight, which was in fact a stone cold masterpiece.
Boyhood well deserved. But having seen it last night my absolute favorite pick is The Babadook for Best First Film. Right on, NYFCC. Also, I LOVE the love for The Immigrant, which is still in my top 10 of the year.
“Interestingly, nothing for Birdman, The Imitation Game, Theory of Everything or Selma.”
The Imitation Game and The Theory of Everything aren’t really the type of movies that are going to do well with critics’ groups (except maybe for Redmayne or Cumberbatch in actor). Birdman or Selma will probably pop up somewhere with critics as we continue down the crit phase of the race.
Bryce, the LAFCA usually goes for at least one foreigner in acting, especially in lead actress. Not always but it seems like a trend as of lately. So I’m going for Cotillard again, for 2 Days, 1 Night, or Ann Dorval.
Some Director stats for you now…
The NYFCC Director pick has gone on to win the Oscar only NINE times since 1970. One match in the 70’s, none in the 80’s, one if the 90’s, six in the 00’s, and only once so far in the ’10’s.
Can’t really complain about this group of winners. Obviously I’m thrilled with the Boyhood wins. I don’t mind years when one movie starts winning everything as long as the movie that keeps winning is one that I love.
LCBaseball,
Boyhood is not necessarily a slam dunk BP, but it has a path to take the prize if it gets nominated for Script, both Supporting Acting, Editing for a minimum of six. Assuming that Linklater wins script and director and Arquette Supporting Actress, you are almost at the path 12 Years took to snake out the top prize from Gravity. Selma is really the only film with a legit chance to contend (not buying that Imitation or Theory have much support for Director or Script)
oh poop! i’m not a huge fan of Boyhood.
Can’t really say anything was “shut out” when they only announce winners, not a set of nominees. And this group has been largely irrelevant over the years when it comes to shedding light on how Oscar might vote…
Damn, Birdman was shut out of New York. That’s kinda unfair. I hope it picks up in L.A.
Kudos to Boyhood. Still waiting for less pressured time to watch it, though.
BIRDMAN SHUT OUT! WOW! THE IMITATION GAME SHUT OUT!
Not surprised by the Boyhood win, it’s long been clear I believe that it’s this year’s critics’ darling and it is arguably a deserving film, but might I point out that only 4 NYCC Best Film winners in the 21st Century have gone on to win the Oscar for Best Picture? And only SIX since the dawn of the 90’s. The odds are against it…
Selma still has time to make a final push, but Linklater is going to be seen as more “due” than DuVernay.
Holy cow! Yay boyhood!
Interestingly, nothing for Birdman, The Imitation Game, Theory of Everything or Selma. A not-too surprising list (Cotillard was the only one, really). Will need to see the NBR and LA Critics prizes before reaching any strong conclusions about where the awards race is heading.
“Bryce, gotta tell you, you’ve had this pegged right. What are your LA thoughts?”
Boyhood and the Cotillard call? Mere luck. Don’t take my predictions seriously,
but as I said
BOYHOOD wins LAFCA with SELMA and/or INHERENT VICE as longshot spoilers. The majority of critics admire the hell out of BIRDMAN, but they don’t really “love” it.
NBR aren’t really critics so they might embrace it? Don’t know. Don’t think so.
Now, I’ve postponed lunch long enough. It was a grand great set of winners and alternatives. My favorite NYFCC in a good while. Cheers, everyone.
And so begins the whining. The main reason Boyhood has made it this far is because several would be contenders have faltered down the stretch, namely Interstellar, Unbroken (based on the mixed reviews), and Birdman. Films that could have garnered a ton of nominations (and still might) with support across the board. Boyhood is hampered by not being a particularly technical picture, but clearly Linklater’s harebrained idea has resonated with people.
No surprises in Best Picture and Best Director.
Congratulations, Boyhood.
And scene.
So this year’s over. Pffft.
BOYHOOD win Best Picture
Bryce, gotta tell you, you’ve had this pegged right. What are your LA thoughts?
Great for Linklater!!!
I think I called supporting actor and supporting actress, screenplay as my NGNG, director, documentary, animated and best actress. Didn’t call Spall or cinematography.
OT Cumberbatch just arrived at the Hobbit premiere. I think he has fans here.
Here comes the wide open year turning into not really.
Linklater. Urgh.
William Friedkin was tweeting about THE BABADOOK yesterday. He should know.
Best Director – Richard Linklater
Best First Film THE BABADOOK.
But if we get to the bottom of the hour (or perhaps sooner) then I would guess a split.
LCbaseball22,
THE IMMIGRANT is on Netflix instant.
But I should point out, it hasn’t dragged long enough at this point.
Geremy, Adrienne Mancia is film curator at the MoMA.
Once the Actress choice started dragging, it could not possibly have been Moore. The longer it takes for Director, the less likely it will be Linklater.
Who is Adrienne Mancia??? And why is she being honored?
Brnyfcce Forestieri
Gotta say, that double win call for Cotillard is impressive
NYFCC voters just don’t care about Moore. Bullshit. She’s still so winning the Oscar.
Well Cotillard is the deserving winner of the year. Nice to see Khondji’s astonishing work being recognized.
Hooray for Cotillard. As much as I love Moore, I’d rather see Cotillard win for The Immigrant than Moore for Still Alice. (Haven’t seen Two Days One Night yet)
Birdman is having a bad day, thought New York was it’s wheelhouse?
oops, didn’t realize that already posted; site is running slow…
Having a hard time believing that Cottliard is going to win two Oscars for non-English language roles. Just throwing that out there.
Nice call Bryce! Is The Immigrant good? The IMDB score at least doesn’t indicate such and I’m a bit confused on when it was released as IMDB has it listed as a 2013 film and I saw the dvd on shelves at Walmart a few months ago at least. I did sound like a potentially interesting film from what I read on the back of the DVD cover…
And with Moore losing to Cottliard(!)the word “lock” has been officially retired from the lexicon.
BRYCE almighty:) Good call!
@ Bryce You predicted Marion for both, silly.
btw, Hobbit premiere is live for anyone who wants. http://hobbitworldpremierelive.uk
Big Hero 6 should’ve won best animated film!!!
I think director is between Linklater, Anderson, Inarritu, and Leigh.

“You did it, Bryce!”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBCw4_XgouA
Some of you guys are really good at predicting. Hats off!
Good job Bryce.
So Director and Picture:
This will either go quick to Linklater and then Boyhood. Or it will split with Anderson.
Does anyone know if “The Immigrant” is eligible for Oscars this year? It played some festivals here in 2013.
“You did it, Bryce!”
I won a trip to Costa Rica?
Cotillard wins for THE IMMIGRANT and TWO DAYS, ONE NIGHT
Wise
Wise
Wise
A righteous call.
Have to agree with the rest saying that the final 20 minutes of “The Lego Movie” will be what make it or break it for you. For me, those final moments made the film shoot from a 7 to a 9 and into my own top 10 for the year. It changes everything you just watched and after catching the movie again on HBO I think even makes the rest of the film better in hindsight.
You did it, Bryce! 🙂
Yes!! Timothy Spall!! I haven’t even seen Mr. Turner yet, but he is just one of those actors who has worked so hard his whole with little recognition. Spall always manages to completely embody his characters both physically and internally… The only problem is he has such a distinct appearance that you don’t realize how how different he is in every film.
All in all, an over due character actor is finally getting his due.
Looking forward to the runner ups list as well!

I went with Johansson in Best Actress. If that’s not the pick, it’s going to be a really starless set of choices.
I have four correct as well.
K Bowen: I’ve got four correct ones so far…
The NY Critics do love Mike Leigh and his actors – really pleased they’ve acknowledged Timothy Spall for Mr Turner (I’ve been tipping the film for awards season recognition since Cannes). He’s very well known as TV regular in the UK (and much loved as an actor) but in the US he’s only really known for Secrets and Lies and Harry Potter (where he has a only a small role). I think he’s in the same position as Nigel Hawthorne 20 years ago with The Madness of King George and could well be on his way to a Best Actor nomination next month.
Last second prediction: Cotillard wins Best Actress for *both* THE IMMIGRANT and TWO DAYS, ONE NIGHT (they love bundles, don’t they?) and they’re both Top 5 all-time performances from Cotillard. It’s obvious.
I’ve gotten three so far (Lego, Arquette, Ida) Anyone else that high?
Not sure how many scores are in but Mr. Tuner only has a 70 BFCA score FYI
“I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Mr. Turner, for some odd reason, is really being underestimated.”
It’s period, it’s beautiful, it’s British, it’s biopic, it’s about the artistic process, it’s Mike fucking Leigh
Oh wait, unlike those other two similar movies, it has no hot piece of charming ass as the lead — so that might be it. Underestimate it at your own peril.
great news about Spall…. a terrific award regardless of how it goes for him later in the awards season.
@Steven Kane,
I’m happy. I predicted Spall. At least something to make me really happy lol
of all things to get right, I picked The Lego Movie.
LOL, LC, I don’t mean to be, but I feel like the 2014 contrarian here. I’m with you on Grand Budapest. I’ve liked several of Wes’s works in the past, but I was pained watching GPH. I found it dull as dishwater and desperately unfunny.
Hmmm…. Interesting winners thus far. Wonder why Birdman is bombing?
WOAH! I did not see that coming. Spall?
Everybody will win something today! Same story…
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Mr. Turner, for some odd reason, is really being underestimated.
@ STEVEN KANE
Hmm, well perhaps any attempt at comedy these days just falls flat for me. For the record I’m 27 and a huge fan of directors such as Billy Wilder, Frank Capra, and Howard Hawks. I like Hitchcock’s form of comedy as well…
I mean he never left, but…
Timothy Spall wins Best Actor
Mike Leigh is back!
I’m very pleased to have predicted The Grand Budapest Hotel for screenplay and Timothy Spall (Mr. Turner) for best actor.
Last Year American Hustle won Best Screenplay!!
So they went the opposite direction than I was going. I’m not a fan of Spall, but I haven’t seen it either.
That’s funny. I went with Anderson for Best Director and Linklater for Best Screenplay. Had the right idea, but looks like I may get that reversed.
LC, I can get if you didn’t like the ending to Lego Movie. But it hit me in the childhood gut of mine. Everything about the movie spoke to me. As for Grand Budapest Hotel, the script is so dense with plot and dialogue. I loved it. I wasn’t always the biggest Wes Anderson fan and it took me some years before I finally matured to his work. That is not meant to insult you as if you aren’t mature, but I know between my ages of 15 to 21(ish) I wasn’t too partial to really dry humor. But I warmed up heavily. GBH is like a fable with a fantastic story.
What’s great about the storytelling in THE LEGO MOVIE is the same thing that was great about the storytelling in SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE. Catch my drift?
I didn’t like The Immigrant, but it was well shot.
I don’t get what their problem is. Neither the names “Tom” nor “Hardy” are that difficult to spell.
Zooey, agree to disagree. But I’ll agree on one thing, some groups will go with the flow and stick with the winners that everyone else is picking. I do think the “bandwagon” is premature…just wait a week or two and I’ll probably say the same thing if an undeserving winner keeps winning 🙂
Oh no! Big Hero 6 is in trouble!
Well, either way I love the LEGO Movie. It’s nice that Chris Pratt is getting recognized for being in popular films unlike that Movie 43.. >_>
First of all I did make it all the way through Lego Movie and I didn’t find the last 20 minutes any better than the rest of it. Secondly, can someone explain what’s so great about Grand Budapest Hotel and why it deserves a screenplay win? I’ve seen the film, it wasn’t entertaining and it wasn’t profound in any way, shape, or form either…
@Steven, you don’t get me. I stated one thing. Maybe it’s too early for that, but I have a hunch jt will be the case (just like last year). I agree that Simmons and Arquette are good but to me they aren’t above many of the other contenders. Norton, Ruffalo and Hawke are just as good as Simmons (or even better) but chances are he’ll keep winning everything. This is what I don’t like. I get your point. If two groups think Boyhood is the best, they should go with it, but the problem is that too often they don’t think anymore and just want to stay relevant in the Oscar conversation. I made some research yesterday. In the last few years, one contender usually wins more than 60-70% of the major awards. In the early 00’s it wasn’t the case (it wasn’t the case in the 90’s either – I checked until 1995 when SAG ensemble started). Back then, most of the categories remained interesting until the very end and the critics agreed rarely with each other. Between 1995 and 2002 there have been ZERO actors who won every major award (GG, SAG, BAFTA, NY, LA, NSFC, Critics’ Choice). Near-sweeps have been rare as well. And now it happens every year, sometimes even twice. Back then, an actor without the Globe or SAG win could have won. Right now you have to go back to 2007 (Swinton) to find an actor who won an Oscar without either Globe or SAG. Back then the Globes and SAG disagreed quite often. Right now they barely disagree. This is what angers me. And I feel it starting. Maybe my rambling is premature, but we’ll see…
I predicted Cotillard for THE IMMIGRANT feeling good about that one now.
BIRDMAN shut out? [please refer to my first message on the board]
Ha! If only. I’m feeling good…my next NGNG is Snowpiercer winning best art direction from the LA Critics.
The Immigrant steals cinematography…WOW!
Long live the first three trimesters, Kane! Now Bong for Director? Yeesh.
And btw when I said Cotillard for acting I meant 2 Days, 1 Night. But now it could be The Immigrant…
WOW Bryce! Between screenplay for Budapest and cinematography for Immigrant…even the supporting actor wins it seems like everything is going to films from earlier in the year. This is awesome!
Darius Khondji for THE IMMIGRANT wins Cinematography. I am 100% behind this call.
Zooey, ok say you run an awards group and I do too. Both of our absolute favorite movies of the year, and we both consider them the best, is Boyhood. Nothing comes close to it. I give my best film to Boyhood. Are you going to give the award to something other than what you feel is the best because other people want to be excited? I know what you’re saying, believe me I do. But sometimes the surest winners are the best.
Let’s see, Simmons is an extremely well liked character, and Arquette is a hell of a comeback story.
Zooey, the thing is there is NO bandwagon yet, since they’re literally the first ones out the gate.
Jesus, I completely agree. The last 20 minutes walked a fine line between misfire and masterstroke. It went masterstroke for me.
I had to return some videotapes. What did I miss?
btw, I agree with Jesus. You have to get to the end of THE LEGO MOVIE to understand why it’s an amazing feat of cinematic storytelling.
Screenplay, my NGNG CALLED IT!!!!!!!
@ Stevenkane,
the thing isn’t that I don’t want deserving people to win. My big problem is that I know Arquette and Simmons will keep winning, even though they’re far away from being standouts in their respective categories. There are many other great performances, especially in supporting actor. If you’ve read what I’ve written here, you would have known that I’m against “spreading the wealth”. But I’m against “jumping a bandwagon” as well and I believe today we’ll see a lot of sure things for Oscar night starting. This angers me.
Holy shit
Wes Anderson wins Best Screenplay
That is a tremendous call, NYFCC!!!
Grand Budapest scores screenplay. People still remember:)
Arquette is this year’s Leto !!
@Free, I agree with you…I personally thought it was just a generic performance though I can see why people are crazy over it.
I realize I’m in the minority here, but I genuinely don’t get the hoopla about Arquette’s performance. Liked the movie, thought she was fine, but truly don’t understand why she’s the one to beat.
Anyone who didn’t get to the last 20 minutes of The LEGO Movie, can’t simply judge the film. It’s a groundbreaking masterpiece, and the last 20 minutes are absolutely amazing and give sense to the whole thing.
I mean, read the reviews and you’ll notice you just were wrong all along, about the very main purpouse of the film itself. Not only, maybe, the best animated film of the year (to put it under How To Train Your Dragon 2, is quite embarrassing, as good as that was), but also one of the best animated films of all time.
To walk out of The Lego Movie in the first 20 minutes, is like walk out of Psycho in the first 20 minutes, before everything twists, turns, gets upside-down, inside-out and a strong message and powerful plot appears crystal clear, and with plenty of subetxt and meanings.
A key: P.O.V. is king, in this film.
People should be thrilled if Linklater actually gets away with this. Cloying and obvious Oscar bait films have done more to diminish the award than the deserved Nolan snub for Batman.
I think if any documentary can pull off best film from the critics groups it’s CitizenFour. I’m picking Keaton, Cotillard, Lubezski, Innaritu, and Boyhood for screenplay and picture. Actually…NGNG I’ll say Grand Budapest for screenplay. I can totally see that winning.
Zooey, if somebody deserves the win then they deserve the win. Spreading out the wins for the sake of keeping people excited is the opposite of what awards bodies are supposed to be doing. And how are they being lazy? They’re the first out of the gate.
I voted for Boyhood to win Best Picture from NYFCC but how great would it be if WHIPLASH surprises or GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL or even CITIZENFOUR.
If both Simmons and Arquette are locks already and keep winning, it’ll be just as boring as last year. Give us a race! Since when are NYFCC voters such lazy voters?? LA is much better.
YES! Arquette’s win is fantastic news:)
Simmons totally deserves his win. He scared the shit out of me and is, literally, the last teacher I’d ever want.
Way to Go! Bring it on Linklater 🙂
Arquette!!!
Oh My God. It’s happening.
I’m ecstatic!!
The Satellites aren’t reliable.
They didn’t nominate DDL for There Will Be Blood lol
But they nominated the film for cinematography lol
While non of the winners so far are bad. I have not agreed yet. Patricia Arquette better win Best supporting actress.
when are they gonna announce NBR’s winners?
Gone Girl & Inherent Vice have done pretty well in the Satellites!! This is a good indication for both films.
Pete you’re probably right — sorry for the misunderstanding. I was talking about Family of the Year’s “Hero”, which would have won in a cakewalk had it been made for the film.
And it seems like J.K. Simmons begins his path to Oscar here.
J.K Simmons
First of many.
LC, Lego Movie is best watched on a big, colorful screen. It also helps if you’re a fan of Robot Chicken…of which I’m a big fan of. Maybe it doesn’t help but it sure reminded me of that show.
Sorry the ^^^ was for Ryan.
^^^I was jumping like a kid watching it in the comforts of my home with my wife. I couldn’t contain my excitement.
Also…my computer showed CitizenFour as “best film” before I clicked open the page and my jaw dropped. I thought, “And here…we…go.”
RYAN I have to say the same. Granted I saw The LEGO movie on a flight to Europe for my honeymoon but it didn’t hold my attention and I loved Legos as well. I had been looking forward to catching the film, especially after hearing of the fantastic reviews, so I was excited to see that it was a choice to watch on the plane but it was really lacking in fun and entertainment if you ask me…
Bryce,
I believe that the song is in fact eligible. Linklater’s people seeded a couple of stories a few weeks ago that they were going to submit two songs Hawke wrote/performed for the film for Oscar consideration, which was a big tell that IFC really thinks they have found a path to BP to make up for an admitted dearth of bottom of the line support.
Awaiting moderation? Is “CITIZENFOUR” reflagged or something?
CITIZENFOUR
Question: Do you learn anything new from that documentary if you closely follow the news like a responsible citizen? Is it great documentary filmmaking? Is it illuminating? I don’t care what some clueless dimwit from the general population is going to learn from of watching it, I don’t care what movies do in that regard in general. I’ll wait for Oliver Stone’s take*
*just kidding. I’ll watch it with an open mind and heart.
I watched the first minute of the LEGO movie and got bored.
I never walk out of a movie and get my money back. Just never happens. I stick it out.
But I was with some other guys the afternoon we went to see The Lego Movie and they had to get the hell out of there. We cashed in our tickets for a refund.
(the theatre was overrun with kindergarteners, for one thing, and they must’ve all arrived by taxi because it was hard to see any adult sup)
I’ll give it another go some day, but first time around it struck me as so simplistic and unfunny. I don’t get it.
(and I LOVE LEGOS. I played with a massive box of Legos all through college.)
Go Birdman!
But that song isn’t eligible for Oscar, right? Because it wasn’t even made specifically for BOYHOOD. Didn’t it exist some time before the film’s release? Please correct me if I’m wrong. BOYHOOD is getting those other xix nominations though.
Two for two. Too bad I’m tied up and will miss the rest. “Get your own breakfast – I’m tracking the NYFCC,” just won’t fly.
Boyhood got the seven nominations it needed from Satellite that it will need from Oscar (Picture/Director/Script/Editing/2 Acting/SONG!!!)
If it gets that, it’s over.
Are they tweeting the results?
IDA
Now there’s a fine choice.
Best Foreign Language Film
Ida (Poland, dir. Pawel Pawlikowski)
Wow, the Satellite committee was pretty cold toward Interstellar it seems to only nominate for some techs when Inception got pretty much everything including director, actor, and supporting actress for 9 in total. Maybe Interstellar is in more trouble than it seemed…
Satellite Awards is weird, they give the award for Best Ensemble to Into The Woods, but don’t nominated the actors in the categories. The voters are differents? Anyone knows?
I watched the first minute of the LEGO movie and got bored.
Hooray for Into the Woods, that’s a good sign it might get some serious attention. Maybe James Corden will get that Best (Supporting) Actor nom. Since they took out No More, I’m not that insistent he deserves to be considered within the Lead category.
The Lego Movie draws first blood:)
Thanks, M1!
Best Ensemble
Into the Woods Disney
ITW won the Ensemble category? I don’t get it, there’s only one nominee.
LEGO MOVIE wins animated. Loved it. I can live with that. There were a couple self-evidently superior choices like HTTYD2 and PRINCESS KAGUYA, but sure.
The Satellite Awards announced their nominations today.
http://www.pressacademy.com/award_cat/current-nominees/
we get the winner announced today? thought it was just votes and maybe winners revealed at a later date.
Forgot these critics groups don’t award editing..
Anyone have any idea approximately when they’ll be announcing? I’ll try to get some work done until then…
thanks Jeremy
wouldn’t this be the 80th NYFCAs?
My thought is that Inherent Vice wins one and follows the same trajectory as Her last year. It isn’t initially perceived as something that will go over with the Academy, but with critical support it gets in and becomes a strong player. But that win will probably come from LAFCA.
For NY – It has to be Boyhood or Birdman for picture and I’m leaning towards Birdman. Either way I think Linklater takes director.
I also expect a second win for Whiplash, beyond Simmons (screenplay or editing).
Last thoughts/predictions before we’re officially on the other side.
-Today, good day for BOYHOOD
-Expect one or two big wins for BIRDMAN. Cinematography and perhaps Supporting Actor, but in general I feel we’re overestimating a little that film’s widespread appeal and passion amongst the critics, highbrow or otherwise. I predict it will not win any of the major Best Picture awards (e.g., LAFCA, NBR, NYFCC, NSFC)
-BOYHOOD wins all three early majors with only SELMA, INHERENT VICE or, even less likely, a foreign choice like IDA or LEVIATHAN as possible spoilers.
The season begins…
Selma/Boyhood splits
I predict Boyhood for Best Picture and Richard Linklater for Best Director.
