I’m so happy for Ida! I’m always proud to be Polish but that film makes me extra proud 🙂 AND it was shot in my city and in my hometown which is kind of unbelievable. I love how this film manages to tell a very intimate story of a girl searching for her identity and place in the world while also revealing some things about Polish history and how complicated it is. If I could make a wish, I would hope for a Supporting Actress nomination for Agata Kulesza (who is undoubtedly one of our finest actresses) and a Cinematography nomination, because it is literally a beautiful film full of unforgettable shots.
Although I need to catch up on some of the better titles that have been or will be released, I have to say that Ida was a real standout this year. It’s lyrical, beautiful and packed with emotional depth charges along with some stunning shots throughout the film. In addition, it is yet another film that is forcing the Polish people to acknowledge some truly horrific and tragic events during the WW2 period.
So glad for Ida. Such a powerful and haunting film. Pawlikowski at his best. So glad for Marion Cotillard and Timothy Spall as well. Neither of them seems to have much of a chance for an Oscar nomination right now, but their towering performances speak for themselves.
Wonderful for Marion Cotillard wins!
Happy to see Ida, one of the most beautiful movies of the year, win so much. I do hope it gets some mentions (at the Oscars) in other categories like Cinematography, at least. If BAFTA embraces it (and it will, Pawlikowski’s already won over there) and Oscar cares a little, they might get a few nominations.
Whoa, “The Mafia only kills in the summer” best comedy? I’m so pleased, it’s a really nice film from my country, I didn’t expect it and I’m happy about it!
IDA. IDA. IDA. IDA. IDA.
Can one dream about an underground version of the Oscars where it announced from the stage that many times? Of course not. But, hopefully, IDA will get not only a Foreign Film nomination, but something ANYthing in another category.
The European Film Awards have a pretty stellar lineup of Best Picture winners the past few years including IDA, THE GREAT BEAUTY, AMOUR, LIVES OF OTHERS, GOMORRAH, 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, WHITE RIBBON, CACHE etc.. Match up more than favorably with the Academy Award winners over that time period, even allowing for some questionable picks like GHOST WRITER. I’d definitely take the EFA over the Oscar winner most recent times.
