“But is Still Alice any good?”
Gregoire.
Prepare to be blown away.
This is NOT a lifetime acheivement award. Trust me, trust me. Every time Julianne Moore wins an honor this year it will be for the stunning performance she gives in a first-class movie with an emotionally devastating role as its centerpiece.
The co-writers and co-directors of Still Alice are gay, and they’re life partners. Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland. In 2006 these two guys won The Grand Jury Prize AND the Audience Award at Sundance — for the incredibly charming film, Quinceañera. They won the Independent Spirit John Cassavetes Award the same year. No need to doubt their talent and exquisite taste. They’re the real deal.
I said on twitter yesterday: Still Alice blows Blue Jasmine to smithereens. And I LIKED Blue Jasmine a lot. But there’s just no comparison. Still Alice is Away From Her to the nth degree.
(Bonus: Kristen Stewart gives a nomination-worthy performance, as well.)
Gotta say again, simply, bluntly: Trust me.
This is the kind of role Sasha is always talking about when she writes about movies featuring women that are abundant in Europe but rare in America. We should be greateful for filmmaking like this.
Only movies that are 3.4/5 or higher should earn Best Picture Nominations in my objective factual opinion. I determined this based on the math of film quality
Yes!!! Can anyone stop me now???
It’s always nice to win a prize, but I wouldn’t consider the Gotham Awards (first given out in 1991) on par with the New York Film Critics Circle and the National Board of Review, whose prizes date back to the 1930s. (Nor would I look to the Gotham Awards as any real indication of Oscar voting.)
Best Picture at the Gothams: 2013 – ”Inside Llewyn Davis”; 2012 – ”Moonrise Kingdom”; 2011 – ”Beginners”/”Tree of Life”; 2010 – ”Winter’s Bone”; 2009 – ”The Hurt Locker”; 2008 – ”Frozen River”; 2007 – ”Into the Wild”; 2006 – ”Half Nelson”; 2005 – ”Capote”; 2004 – ”Sideways,” etc.
For more perspective, the N.Y. Times’ Cara Buckley just posted a story called ”Why the Gotham Awards Are, Ahem, a Tad Lightweight”
Nice. I might actually see Birdman(probably my favorite of the year…well that or Whiplash) a second time this week. It’s been 3 weeks since I’ve seen it and I wanna digest it one more time before I see it again on dvd/blu-ray. Rewatched Gone Girl and Nightcrawler. Still hold up pretty well especially Nightcrawler. Hoping this is the first of many for Keaton.
@Vee
Yeah that’s probably true. I was just surprised by how negative-mediocre the initial reaction is. Anyway, I have to see it and I don’t really trust most reviewers except few of them.
Don’t be disappointed yet. Wait until the film reaches 100 reviews on the tomato meter and reaches its consensus on Metacritic.
A movie directed by Angelina Jolie is bound to suffer from an outrageous backlash from the media. It is a shame because Unbroken is compelling, enthralling, and inspiring. Jack O’Connell gives such a strong performance. Some of the criticism is seriously baseless.
Unbroken deserves to be nominated for Best Picture.
I very much liked González Iñárritu’s (mostly) unintentionally hilarious speech. First of many for Keaton I presume — let’s see if he can go all the way. Adored the “Gotham” joke. That’s all.
Good night.
Out of topic but I just noticed that Unbroken’s current metacritic is 59. I rarely trust metacritic but I have to say it’s kind of disappointing. All that hype…
Pretty cool that in 1 day, BOTH Boyhood and Birdman win separate “Best Picture” awards. Now Selma can win National Board of Review, and we have a 3 horse race. *Fingers crossed*
The same city, same day, two different set of winners (except Citizenfour)…And as always, some people are trying to read too much into these very early awards….Today’s results don’t mean much…We will wait and see
Holy shit Birdman won. It’s my #2 favorite film of the year and I’m so glad that it won both Actor and Best Feature. Boyhood is my favorite film of the year but I was hoping that Birdman wins at least one major prize at Gotham. Well deserved
YES! BIRDMAN WINS BEST FEATURE!!!
Totally makes up for its no-show in New York. ^_^
Someone needs to get one of those big hooks for Keener. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz……………………
Meryl Streep is kind of a weirdo.
I was glad to see Gugu get a nomination.
I hope Riz Ahmed wins.
Woot!
