The AMPAS has just put out the following release, a change from the past.
Oscar producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron announced today that actor Chris Pine, Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs, and directors Alfonso Cuarón and J.J. Abrams, on Thursday, January 15, will announce the nominations in all 24 Oscar categories at a special two-part live news conference at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.
“Each of the three years we’ve produced the show, we have attempted to refresh elements of the process and the telecast,” said Zadan and Meron. “This year, we’re honored to start a new tradition that celebrates the contributions of all the nominees by announcing all 24 categories. We’re thrilled that a distinguished actor and two world-class film directors are part of the initial launch.”
At 5:30 a.m. PT, Cuarón and Abrams will announce the nominees in the following categories: Animated Feature Film, Documentary Feature, Documentary Short Subject, Film Editing, Original Song, Production Design, Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing and Visual Effects.
At 5:38 a.m. PT, Pine and Boone Isaacs will take the stage to unveil the nominations for Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Cinematography, Costume Design, Directing, Foreign Language Film, Makeup and Hairstyling, Original Score, Adapted Screenplay, Original Screenplay and Best Picture.
“We’re delighted to have Chris, Alfonso and J.J. participate in the excitement of Nominations morning, which, for the first time, will highlight nominees in all categories,” said Boone Isaacs. “This new approach enables the Academy to further recognize excellence across our entire industry and underscore the full spectrum of the arts and sciences of motion pictures.”
“We’re thrilled to have such exceptional talents present the nominations in a completely new format that furthers our mission and honors all of the artists who make movies,” said Dawn Hudson, Academy CEO.
The Nominations Announcement is a live news conference where more than 400 media representatives from around the world will be gathered. The event will be broadcasted and streamed live on www.oscars.org/live.
Nominations information for all categories will be distributed simultaneously to news media in attendance and via the official Oscars website, www.oscar.com.
Why do awards shows think it’s okay to have a potential nominee for that year announcing the nominations? Hell, if they needed an Into the Woods presence, Depp would’ve appropriate as his name wasn’t submitted for a nomination. And yes, I’m being cynical here, but the producers of the telecast felt the need to boost their own film through selecting an actor from their movie to announce the nominations?
And a question for Sasha, why do you think they chose three people to join the AMPAS president but they were all MEN… again? Couldn’t someone have reached out and contacted a woman, like Julia Roberts or Sally Field or heck Megan Fox?
Watch Chris Pine say “Chris Pine” come supporting actor category. Or on the other hand watch his face when Into the Woods is completely shut out.
Still laughing about “a new precursor is born”
I, too, hate getting up so early to watch the nominees, but honestly I can’t remember the last time I watched a prime time show while it was actually airing. Thanks DVR!
I’d rather be a little sleepy than have to re-arrange my evening to see it.
There will be a live stream at oscars.org.
CNN and BCC will do it no matter what. They always do it.
Really exciting. Unfortunately, I will be at work and will see some of the nominees online before I’m able to watch the full nomination show. Will E! have the full announcements? I’m a little nervous about taping CNN for fear it will be pre-empted by coverage of the situation in France.
Wow! Fucking great news! I’m awfully happy about it! Now, take back honorary awards to Oscar Night!
I’m so excited I don’t know how I’m going to survive the week! It’s my birthday tomorrow, then I’m having a golden globe dinner Sunday and then on Thursday is the OSCAR nominations and a dinner for the critics choice awards!
I love that they are announcing all categories!
For me, the nominations are actually more exciting than the actual awards presentations. I a so JAZZED!
With the awards themselves, many times we seem to have a pretty good clue (and sometimes a certainty) about whom is going to win each category.
But the nominations can contain many surprises.
Just think about last year. Emma Thompson, Tom Hanks and Robert Redford were all expected to be nominated. All got sacked right out of the starting gate.
I fear there may be some real upsets this year as well: Jessica Chastain? She may not get recognized even though she’s deserving. And I think Marion Cotillard may be in trouble (only because I don’t think many Academy members see that many foreign film). Tilda Swinton? She was great in “Snowpiercer”, but there doesn’t really seem to be much buzz surrounding this film at all (which was one of my favorite films of last year.
Awesome! Can’t wait!
It’s always exciting to see who make the cut, and who GOT cut. There’s always a few potential nominees that get the cold shoulder at the last minute (i.e. Ben Affleck – Best Director for ‘Argo’). The question is…Who will those unfortunate souls be this year? Then there’s the surprise nominees we didn’t even expect. These usually pop up in the foreign language films but also have a tendency to be domestically sporadic. That’s the beauty of the Oscar race: You never know who will make it in.
A new precursor will be “OMG, such and such missed the editing nom”
A new Precursor is born!
lololol just what we fucking need fs
I’m super happy about this. Scrawling down the announced nominees as they’re revealed is so exciting, one of my favourite things about Oscar nomination morning… which is actually Oscar nomination afternoon for me. 9:30a.m. PT wouldn’t work for me tho cos I’d be at work so hell no to that shit!
At last!
Looks like an eggs benedict morning, not just coffee.
Oscar pundits will now have eight minutes between the 5:30 and 5:38 broadcasts to update predictions in the big categories. A new Precursor is born!
Still hoping for Into the Woods to be well liked in the nominations. It would be hilarious if Chris Pine were nominated and she announced it.
Chris Pine presenting means that Into The Woods will be nominated in several categories? hahaha I’m a dreamer :p
Fantastic! Now if only they could do the announcement via a primetime special.
Roby: It is still as important to announce the nominees at 5:30, since the media (printed, web or tv) and we all spend ALL DAY talking about the nominations… and it gets printed the day after, so…
Plus, remember this is an international affair, think globally. Consider how many of Awards Daily users are from outside the US.
It would be cool if they borrowed from the Grammys and turned the announcement into a live televised program, but this at least is a vast improvement.
What a great news! This should be a landmark. I never understood why they only announced live the “main categories” while praised they were all equally as important.
I truly hope this goes on every year.
This is fantastic news! I’m sure the morning shows won’t even bother with the tech awards coverage, so Oscars live streaming it is.
Great news! But why did it take so long?
I still don’t know why it has to be at 5:30 AM. Originally that was done for a print journalism timeline. We are in a 24/7 news cycle world. Why not at the barely decent time of 9:30AM? Why not construct a one hour evening show that not only announces but talks about the categories (again that sound vs sound editing), the history of the Oscars, the nomination process, interesting facts about the nominees, etc.
About damn time! Really happy about this. Below-the-line categories deserve a lot of spotlight, now more than ever when we have films shinning about this aspects like Life of Pi or Gravity (both Best Director winners)
