American Sniper’s Box Office Predicted $200 Mil in Two Weeks

Boxoffice.com is predicting American Sniper will get close to $200 million this weekend, in its second week of release. While this is to be expected with tent poles, for it to be this high, this fast? Something else is going on.

Both Unbroken and Gone Girl got box office boosts because of the popularity of their books. Sniper also reaps that kind of popularity — and it has film critics mostly supporting it and the many Oscar nominations.

The money comes from the usual things but the extra boost has to be the usually disenfranchised groups that populate so much of America and yet are underserved by Hollywood – the right wingers, the Christians, the military families who lean right. The reason? The GOP has long been criticizing Hollywood for being a liberal hive of wussies. This is true nearly across the board, from Fox News to Drudge to Breitbart. Hollywood is “the enemy.” American Sniper, though, shows what happens when you open those doors and it’s such a moment of shock and awe I wonder if we’ll start seeing a slew of films that appeal to that demographic.
