Saint Laurent MURDERS Yves Saint Laurent with those Best Film and Best Director nominations!
Bertrand Bonello ftw!
While my favorite by far is Two Days, One Night I quite liked Clouds of Sils Maria. Not sure why some say Kstew is playing off her public persona, as Chloe is the exaggerated Hollywood wild child. That said there are a lot of quasi meta moments as it focuses on youth and aging in Hollywood. As the person above said, the interplay involving the two women was quite good and probably the reason for KStew’s nomintation imo as she managed to hold her own in a good way opposite Binoche. I very much enjoyed it, although I thought it ran a bit long. My male friend found it boring. I think it is the type of film that may resonate with women more.
I saw Sils Maria at the EU Film Festival at the AFI in DC last month. The movie is essentially a long meditation on acting and actresses growing older in the industry. My $0.02. The movie has really interesting moments. Binoche is, as usual, wonderful and really does the character justice in an understated way. Stewart’s character doesn’t have a big emotional arc. She is clearly just playing a one-off of herself (or at least her public personna), and that is fine enough. She is perfectly serviceable in the role. And she and Binoche have surprisingly interesting chemistry together. The Chloe Grace Moretz parts skew over-the-top. Her role (not her fault) disrupts the rhythm of the film a little. Overall, I say see it. But just settle in for 2.5 hours of looooonnnnng meditations on acting and aging.
Isn’t this list missing the Cesar nominees for Best Foreign Film?

Is SILS MARIA any good? What’s the buzz around it?
Over the moon for the all the SAINT LAURENT received. I beat them to the punch and anointed it a week ago. Part of my Top 15 no less. Also glad they liked EASTERN BOYS so much, another Essential Title designee from a week ago. I can’t wait to see TIMBUKTU — it’s looking more and more like the premier film I missed on 2014. Disappointed they’ve failed to recognize EDEN, but then again, the thing is not very awardsy, also not so short.
I didn’t particularly love “Sils Maria”, but both the acting nominations are, in fact, spot on.
As is any nom for “Two Days, One Night”.
However, the hightlight is clearly the love for “Timbuktu”. Now that’s something I can shake off my head. Not that I want to.
I really need to see Sils Maria. Thrilled for Kristen who has made wise choices post-Twilight and it is paying off.
Kristen Stewart winning = America winning.
I saw Sils Maria at a festival in DC last month. For me it’s among the best films I’ve seen last year, and one I’m sure the AD crew will love.
