Meryl Streep seems to defy any sort of constraints put upon her by our bizarre culture — by all rights she should have packed it in long ago – and yet here she is, holding the record for Oscar nominations, holding an electric guitar in 2015. Streep will star in Ricki and the Flash, written by Diablo Cody and directed by Jonathan Demme. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the film isn’t killed by critics sharpening their knives for Cody. We need more Diablo Codys in Hollywood. The pic opens in August which has all of the internet chickens clucking about, like it’s some big catastrophe. If this year proved anything it’s that it doesn’t really matter anymore when a film comes out.
I just found out Sebastian Stan will be in this — totally beside the point, but I know him intimately — so now this along with TOMORROWLAND and MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. are probably my most anticipated movies of summer 2015.
I love when Streep decides to work with, you know, a director?
Please, more Jonathan Demmes and Mike Nichols and Spike Jonzes and Clints and Ciminos, and less Wells and Marshalls and Lloyds.
Streep such support auteurs. And female auteurs, too. Instead of collaborating with people like Nancy Meyers, why doesn’t she use her star power to support people like Courtney Hunt, Kimberly Peirce, Debra Granik and Andrea Arnold?
I just don’t get the Streep effect. So many much better actresses!!!
@Rich
Pfeiffer is a talented actress. I hope she gets the best roles she deserves. But Cody said she has Streep in mind while writing this role insipred by her mother-in-law. So it’s Streep all along.
I love Meryl, but I so wish Michelle Pfeiffer would work with Demme again…she would have been awesome in this!
Thanks, Ethan. Was anyone saying that about Jack Nicholson, Paul Newman, Marlon Brando or Laurence Olivier?
Hey George Golden – Meryl isn’t hogging on roles- they just go to her cos she is good at what she does. … and “almost a joke now and i sure she will be nominated again…” JOKE???? You think it is funny if someone excels in what they do???? Would you prefer some actor to be nominated cos they are NO GOOD or nominated again constantly cos they are really good? I guess you would prefer the earlier.
Julie & Julia and The Devil Wears Prada were released in the summer and it didn’t really make the Academy forget about her so if the film is great (we all know she will be) or at least good like those two were, she will be a contender once again. BO-wise August has been a great month for female-centric films in recent years : The Hundred-Foot Journey, Hope Springs, The Help, Eat Pray Love, Julie & Julia all did good/great business which is particularly impressive considering the headliners were all female, over 40 (Julia Roberts), well more like over 60 (Meryl Streep) or dare I say over 60 AND foreign (Helen Mirren) or a woman of color (Viola Davis). Long story short, the studio is not banishing the film to August, it is looking at precedent and simply wants to make money first before they embark on an inevitable (and pricey) awards campaign. Good thing is the Demme-Cody-Streep trio is more than promising and may just be able to deliver a rare gem in the end, one that deserves all the hoopla, Box Office and awards success.
Streep has shot an average of about a movie per year in her long career, leaving out cameo or short appearances and voice work and many of her movies are let’s face not masterpieces, so please stop saying she gets all the roles. Chastain has been I think in four or five movies in 2014 so she should just shut up. The reason people think streep has taken up so many roles is because she makes them unforgettable, even if the movie itself is not god (The Iron Lady). Is Hope Springs or Music of the heart or Ironweed or A cry in the dark roles to die for? I can’t seem able to picture hundred of actresses pressing to get those roles …
So Meryl has 19 nominations already and is showing no signs of slowing down. She’s 65 now….my guess is she’ll end up with at least 25 nominations before all is said and done.
Isnt there another actress her age to play this role. Why is she always hogging all these roles?I agree with Jessica Chasten all the roles are given to her.I mean she is a great actress regardless but it just seems a bit too much and almost a joke now and i sure she will be nominated again… I know i will be attacked by this …I just had to say it…
She looks 35 in this pic, and 40 lbs lighter.
Wha happen?????
I really admire this woman, every time I think I’ve seen all she has to offer she comes out with something like this, plus her working with Diablo and Demme it’s pretty exciting on itself, so I can not wait for this one, (btw, I’m beginning to think that Death Becomes Her potion was real, she is looking younger and sexier these days, you go Streep)
Anyone slamming the August release date is out of their minds. Not only did this year show that release dates don’t need to matter, but Woody Allen puts his films out in the summer and if they’re good they do well for awards.
I think release delays/pushbacks/reschedules are the only kind of release dates that make me question the quality of a film.
Though I am very curious about Hail, Caesar’s February 2016 date and whether or not it’s positioned there as an opportunity to surprise release into 2015 or to comfortably delay for a later 2016 date without alarm either way.
Thanks, Ryan! I remember praising RACHEL’s photography on this very same forum, so I’m glad we’re in such great hands, apparently.
For the record, Cody has been very consistent as a writer. Juno, Jennifer’s Body, Young Adult, and her series United States of Tara. I haven’t seen her directorial debut though. But her filmography just shows what a risk-taker she is. One of our talented writers today. Looking forward to this.
I’ve nothing but absolute admiration for Meryl. She just rocks.
I do understand why people are “tired” of her, but that she’s in her Mid-SIXTIES still that way out front in the business, despite the fact she was never really beautiful (by Hollywood standards I mean-She’s beautiful on a different level) or “fuckable” and became very late a BO draw is nothing but astonishing.
I hope she takes everything as long as she can.
As for Cody, I didn’t dislike “Juno”, but I found it a bit overrated. On the other side I really loved “United States of Tara”.
At the very least I think it looks like a great role for Meryl. Can’t wait to see and hear her, as always. 8)
I don’t remember anyone putting constraints on Meryl Streep.
by all rights she should have packed it in long ago
Oh wait.
Wow–Meryl Streep IS Melissa Etheridge in this photo.
I’ll keep fingers crossed for this one. While I actually really disliked Juno, I thought Young Adult was genius. I’ll be very curious to see what Cody comes up with this time. That I find her so hit or miss is refreshing since I feel like it just displays how many chances she takes.
Bryce, I think it was shot by Declan Quinn. (Rachel Getting Married, Vanity Fair, In America, Leaving Las Vegas, Breakfast on Pluto, One True Thing)
Excited about a Meryl Streep movie in a long time — wait — for the first time? Maybe?
For the love of me, anyone knows who’s DP on this?
