@Philip, fortunately, JJ Abrams and Disney are not stupid so Lupita “Emoting With My Hands” Nyongo is not MAIN anything. Antagonists are Adam Driver (Kylo Ren, the new Sith villain aka main villain) and Gwendoline Christie (Captain Phasma aka metallic Storm Trooper). Lupita is reportedly playing a mo’cap alien, one of two. She may be the one who gives Leia Vader’s lightsabre (if you look closely, you’ll see the giver is orange and has feline-like face, so not a human). One of those two aliens joins the leads so his/her role is that of comic sidekick a la C3P0/R2 and the newbie droid BB8. Another is his/her mentor. So Lupita is one of them, whichever is code-named Rose. She’s not getting leading roles and is already offered ‘someone’s mother” roles. LOL, that was fast. usually takes an actress to hit 50 before she is downgraded from “someone’s love interest” to “someone’s mom”. Lupita skipped the whole phase, lol. Serves her right.
I can’t believe I’m actually interested in seeing a new Star Wars movie. Everything looks great so far. This does not look anything like the prequels. Also, when was the last time we heard trailer music this skillfully crafted? I’m glad they stayed away from the artless, cacophonous, generic trailer music that accompanies most trailers today. It would have been a poor fit for Star Wars anyway.
Steve, Haha!! Yup. I wouldn’t call Smokey and the Bandit a “good” movie, but as I was growing up, I must have seen it on tv 50 times. It seems like it was on every other weekend on Saturday afternoon on TBS. I love that movie. I can’t help it. But yeah….
Bryce – it came out fine, I was just agreeing with you on anatomical matters). Also, you’re the only other person I know that also loved Providence!
Smokey & the Bandit – Al, Al, Al. One thing about that – if Sally Field survived S&TB to become a respected actress, KStew will weather the Twilight years just fine – and very soon.
I just want to say first that I understand why there is so much hype for Episode VII. I am excited too. But actually, this teaser didn’t do anything for me. I’ll start getting truly excited once we get a full theatrical trailer.
I meant to sound enthusiastic about “it”. Sorry if it came out the other way.
’77 was funny that way – but yeah, The Academy got it right. Allen’s Magnum opus was clearly the best American film of the year. Countless other treasures though! Here’s my Top 20 (and the truth)!
1. PROVIDENCE, Alain Resnais
2. THAT OBSCURE OBJECT OF DESIRE, Luis Buñuel
3. SUSPIRIA, Dario Argento
4. ANNIE HALL, Woody Allen
5. CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, Steven Spielberg
6. MAN OF MARBLE, Andrzej Wajda
7. SORCERER, William Friedkin
8. KILLER OF SHEEP, Charles Burnett
9. SOLDIER OF ORANGE, Paul Verhoeven
10. ERASERHEAD, David Lynch
11. STAR WARS, George Lucas
12. CROSS OF IRON, Sam Peckinpah
13. STROSZEK, Werner Herzog
14. OPENING NIGHT, John Cassavetes
15. RABID, David Cronenberg
16. MARTIN, George Romero / PEPPERMINT SODA, Diane Kurys [tie!]
17. THE DUELISTS, Ridley Scott
18. SCUM, Alan Clarke
19. 3 WOMEN, Robert Altman
20. BLACK SUNDAY, John Frankenheimer
Much as I love Lupita and Oscar Isaac (“phat ass” and all, thx Bryce), I’ll save my allowance for Denis Villeneuve’s sequel to Blade Runner, with (hopefully) Ryan Gosling.
“The Force” gives me the runs, as do silly comments about Annie Hall.
Annie Hall WAS a no-brainer for all the wrong reasons. Still as much the stupendously wrong choice for BP in 2015 as it was back then. An absolute disgrace.
Time for the movies that nobody will see outside the arthouse niche *coughMeEarlAndTheDyingGirlcough* to sit the next Oscars out. This is going to be the ultimate test of Oscars wanting to think they’re still rrelevant.
So wait, Pete, are you saying that if The Force Awakens doesn’t become a Best Picture contender, it’s likely to bump Avatar from the top of the all-time worldwide box office chart? I don’t quite understand the logic.
I’d feel more like it’d have a chance at grossing that much money if it was good enough to win Best Picture. And duh, it won’t be, it’s JJ Abrams fml. But anyway, ain’t no way this makes nearly as much money as Avatar. It won’t even make $2 billion worldwide, I’d say. Avengers: Age of Ultron will certainly gross more.
I was thinking that it could be like Gravity, with a much more legit chance at BP than Star Wars really had if one looked at the 1977 field objectively (really Annie Hall seems like a no-brainer in retrospect)
It would be the height of all ironies if JJ Abrams’ iteration of Star Wars is the one that becomes the truly legit Oscar contender. If not, Avatar’s run as all time BO champ is over this year.
An off-topic question:
Is the song See You Again from Furious 7 eligible for Oscar consideration?
“you’re the only other person I know that also loved Providence!”
That’s insane. What’s there not to love?
Al, I don’t dislike SMOKEY at all!

Bryce, I noticed you didn’t include Smokey and the Bandit on your best of 1977 list. 🙂
I’m fine with this.

Ryan Gosling will make a beautiful replicant

@Paul Hanlin Jr
Well if it hadn’t been for those stupid Star Wars Prequels, I may have agreed with you. Anyways, Annie Hall at least was a rare comedic win .

You can discern Isaac’s phat ass as he jogs on his sweatpants in the film A MOST VIOLENT YEAR.

Flavio – I’m thinking Lupita is a main antagonist. I hope. lol
ABHI,
I was thinking that it could be like Gravity, with a much more legit chance at BP than Star Wars really had if one looked at the 1977 field objectively (really Annie Hall seems like a no-brainer in retrospect)
Well, the original did win 6 Oscars and was nominated for Best Picture. I think that counts as legit.

The new teaser trailer looks fantistic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngElkyQ6Rhs
It looks like there will be a strong female character as a main protagonist
