Ava DuVernay is a pioneer for women filmmakers and filmmakers of color not because she is both of those things but because she never considered taking traditional paths to do what she wanted to do. Of course, she had her start in marketing thus she knew the backroads and short cuts that others don’t.
Ava’s distribution company, AFFRM, was launched in 2011 and since has released eight feature films. She is currently launching the company’s membership drive to make it grow and broaden its reach.

I can’t believe this has no notes! Unless my computer is acting up.
What Ava is doing here is fantastic. If you have the right network, it doesn’t matter what Hollywood thinks or wants unless you’re looking for their approval. If you care about representation and diversity and marvelous storytelling, you can do that with the right people independent of “The Industry.” I’m a part of a similar arts collective movement for API Americans called #WeOwnThe8th and – newly – I’m also a proud AFFRM rebel.
