Listen to Robyn Sherwell’s transcendent cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide” and then spend the rest of the afternoon trying to swallow the lump in your throat. This track will be featured in Sarah Gavron’s and Abi Morgan’s Suffragette when it opens Oct 23. Since this version of “Landslide” is not an “original song written specifically for a film,” it won’t be in play for Oscar consideration, so I’m glad I don’t give a shit about that silly restriction right now. Thanks to our good buddies @joeynolfi and https://twitter.com/alicegbeck at ServingCinema for bring this to my attention, and for finding the perfect word to describe it: Haunting.
Stevie Nicks has said that “Landslide” was inspired by the mountainous weight of the world bearing down upon her in 1974 when she was struggling as a destitute waitress, but it’s incredibly moving to hear how well the stripped-down ballad wraps itself in a delicate veil of period-appropriate folk simplicity and adapts its lyrics to the central themes of Suffragette.
As far as covers go, I think I prefer the one Smashing Pumpkins did. Hell, I think I even like the Dixie Chicks’ take on the song better too…
Don’t like it, at all. It’s inferior to the original and packs much less of a punch. The arrangement and tentative vocal have wiped out the power. She sounds asleep.
