Variety’s Kris Tapley tweeted the story this morning that The Big Short will premiere at AFI. The Paramount pic will enter the award fray with not a lot of buzz but enough big names to ensure people watch it. The trailer has a Moneyball/Argo kind of feel to it. Says Tapley:
[quote_regular name=”” icon_quote=”no”]The film, based on the book by Michael Lewis (“The Blind Side”), tells the story of bond and real estate derivative geeks who saw the housing crash of 2008 coming and bet against the collateralized debt obligation bubble, thus striking it rich. It’s kind of like betting the “Don’t Pass” line, for the craps players out there. These guys, who were really just trying to stick it to the big banks (which themselves would of course be bailed out), hit the jackpot while the American dream was being flushed down the toilet for regular Joes in the real world.[/quote_regular]
Both Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling appear to be doing serious character actor work here, which should put them into the already way too crowded supporting actor race. Christian Bale will also have to squeeze into an already tightly filled room for Best Actor.
Wall Street will once again be the topic as we head into an election year.
