The ACE Eddie awards are tonight, though for some reason I thought they were tomorrow night. Either way, gird your loins, Oscarwatchers, tonight — it’s all happening.
The Big Short seems to be set for an easy ride tonight as it’s in the Comedy category. The Martian went into Drama, unlike at the Globes. I’m not seeing any movie beating The Big Short in this instance. That puts all of the heat on the Drama category. And it could tell us which of the two big tech movies might have the edge.
I’m still going to bet that the film with the Best Picture nomination is the best bet to win (13/15 out of the past winners have had BP nominations — and no film since they expanded Best Picture has won the Eddie without a Best Pic nod), although honestly Star Wars: The Force Awakens could totally take it (and then take the Oscar too).
Since the ACE Eddie awards split into Drama and Comedy in 1999 (yes, I’ve been doing this fucking shit for as long as that), 6 out of 15 of the Drama Eddie winners have matched the Oscar for Best Picture. while 2 out of 15 of the Comedy Eddie winners have won Best Picture.
But let’s pretend Star Wars isn’t in the mix and that it is probably down to The Revenant vs. Mad Max: Fury Road. It’s hard to imagine any film beating Mad Max for editing. How incredible is the editing by Margaret Sixel? But they might like The Revenant more as a movie and feel it has more heat overall. Sixel is not an ACE member, though I’m not sure if that makes a difference or not. I think most of you will predict Mad Max to take this, but watch out for The Revenant.
