Below are the songs nominated for Best Original Song. Among the nominees are David Lang’s “Simple Song #3” from Youth, Sam Smith’s “Writing’s On The Wall” from Spectre, bringing the James Bond franchise nominations in the Best Original Song category to five. Songwriter Diane Warren received her eigth nomination for “Til It Happens To You” from the documentary, The Hunting Ground. Warren co-wrote the song with Lady Gaga.
Take a listen to the songs below:
“Til It Happens to You” – Music and Lyrics By Diane Warren & Lady Gaga -The Hunting Ground
“Earned It” – Music and Lyrics by Abel Tesfaye, Ahmad Balshe, Jason Daheala Quenneville and Stephan Moccio – Fifty Shades of Grey

“Writing’s On The Wall” – Music and Lyrics by Jimmy Napes and Sam Smith – Spectre
“Mantra Ray” – Music by J. Ralph; Lyric by Antony Hegarty – Racing Extinction
I really think Diane Warren should finally win. Not because of the son itself but because she’s a legend in this category and needs to win someday. Besides, Gaga would join other well know musicians that have won in the past.
However, my favorite song has to be “Manta Ray”. I don’t like Sam Smith, to be honest, or the song. “Earned it” seems too popular to win and the one from Youth is fine, just fine.
I am still surprised about the absence of See You Again. Of these, I only like Earned It, but it will go to the message ridden Til It Happens to You primarily because of Warren never winning an Oscar and that message, though it’s not terribly good, but it’s better than The Writing’s On the Wall. Simple Song #3 and Manta Ray are odd Oscar nominees.
My favorite is Earned It-the other songs are boring-to me.
I agree, such a cool song.
I’m still bitter that “Feels Like Summer” from Shaun The Sheep was snubbed.
Quel dommage.
Never ignore J. Ralph in the future.
I’d love if they created a category for voice acting and ensemble too.
I agree, MANTA RAY is so haunting, the best of the bunch. I would really like J. Ralph and Antony Hegarty to win (it would be the first ever win for a transgender person). But we can assume that Warren finally found a way to win an oscar working with Gaga.
Anyway the only song I would not like to see win is WOTW, which is nothing but a Adele’s SKYFALL rip-off.
Best Animated Short Nominee World of Tomorrow is on Netflix!
Writing’s On The Wall is the best song! The rest is so boring.
“Til It Happens to You” deserves to win, mainly because Lady Gaga managed to tone down, IMHO, Diane Warren’s shmaltzy songwriting style considerably.
Also, it would be a nice way of finally honoring Diane Warren.
I can’t believe that manta ray thing got in and they ignored love me like you do and feels like summer.
Gaga has this in the bag. She is well-known, acclaimed, and has performed last year at the Oscars.

I made the mistake of listening to these before nominations. They are all terrible. And Academy might have picked the worst of the worst.
Further proving what a joke this category has become. I wish they would eliminate it and replace it with a more deserving category (Stunt work, ensemble, casting etc.) This way, they could bring in more entertaining musical guests onto the Oscars that did not have a connection to a particular nomination.
The song of Sam Smith is the most terrible “007 Bond Theme Song” ever been composed so far. In the UK Charts the song was only 4 days no.1 in the top100 charts, due to some marketing strategies from Sony Music! All I can say, it would be a horrible scenario if this song is winning at the OSCARS. In EUROPE not even one Radio Channel is playing this kind of sh….! It’s all up to the campaining budget from the “BARBARA BROCCOLI” family, and that’s very big!+. Now make your 2cents.:)) I’m still one of the old boys who tends to our all beloved Dame Shirley Bassey, actually living in Monte Carlo, she is there well known as “Champagne Charly” with her unbeatable song of GOLDFINGER. My most respect to our Dame Shirley Bassey, I’ll kiss you and I love you, Dame Shirley!
Diamonds or Gold are girls best friends, but you can’t take Diamonds or Gold to bed, and Diamonds are better than men or? :))) Lol – you’re my dear Dame Shirley Bassey, You’re the best! :)) 16 piece of orchester !!!!
It is not. Writings on the wall is one of the best from James Bond songs.
Here would be my final 6:
‘Til It Happens to You, Lady Gaga, The Hunting Ground
Fighting Stronger, Meek Mill, Jhené Aiko e Ludwig, Creed
Earned It, The Weeknd, Fifty Shades of Grey
See You Again, Wiz Khalifa ft. Charlie Puth , Furious 7
The Light That Never Fails, Andra Day, Meru
One Kind of Love, Brian Wilson, Love and Mercy (don’t care if it was DQ’d, it belongs here)
“Manta Ray” by J. Ralph and Antony Hegarty (from Antony and the Johnsons, one of the best Singers in the World!!!) is by far the best Song from all the Nominees! If i would be an Academy Award Member i knew for which Song i would vote.
The Spectre song will probably win, even though it is one of the worst James Bond songs.
