The nominations for the 88th Academy Awards have been announced. Read reactions from the stars:
Phyllis Nagy talking to Awards Daily on her Best Adapted Screenplay nomination:
“Oh my God! I just feel like passing out right now. Oh boy! Who would have thunk. I’m home in LA, still in my PJ’s taking this all in.
It’s unbelievable. At times like these you feel like reverting to monosyllabic exclamations. Holy Shit! or whatever it is.
It’s a good morning, let’s be nice and understated about it.
I was awake and rooting heavily for all of my Carol mates and for some friends in other categories, or people that I’ve met along the way who I’ve grown to be very fond of. After I saw the little Carol placard come up in my category, honestly I was really not expecting it. I was being all stiff upper lip and prepared to be not there. I just got instantly dizzy and screamed. I’m sure I woke up my entire neighborhood, but too bad…it doesn’t even seem real.”
Emmanuel Lubezki talking to Awards Daily on his eight Oscar nomination for The Revenant
“Oh my gosh this is crazy! I feel very very happy. After a movie this crazy and difficult, it’s very nice to get love from your peers. It feels really really nice. A lot of the movie was almost experimental, you never know if your hypothesis is working or not, so when you get the peers love, you feel that maybe the experiment was ok.
It’s very nice and it’s really great to see a lot of the Revenant crew getting recognition and it feels amazing.
I was sleeping because they’re announced so early. I was in bed and my phone started vibrating and I started seeing the reactions.
Now, I’m going to work a little bit and then probably have a tequila and party. No, I’m just going to go back to work.”
Matt Charman – Talking to Awards Daily on his first Oscar nomination for Bridge of Spies
“I’m sort of walking on air. I feel pretty good. I’m just about to go out for a meal, my wife and I always go out for a meal on Thursday night so we have a nice little celebration together.
I was working and in my office, writing. I saw the time, and had it on my laptop, and I started pacing and staring at it.
Here’s the thing, it’s a B with Bridge of Spies, so if it wasn’t the first thing out of the announcer so it wasn’t going to happen. They said it, and I couldn’t believe it. Then this flurry of wonderful phone calls and emails started and it’s been non-stop all afternoon. It’s been so lovely.”
Josh Singer Talking to Awards Daily on Spotlight’s recognition
“It’s a pretty exciting day. I think what’s most exciting is most of our folks were recognized today. We have such a great cast and to see two of our luminaries be recognized, Mark and Rachel be recognized for the great, great work they did, that’s super thrilling.
To see Tom be recognized for directing which I think he’s the best director working in the business. He’s got such style and craft and it’s very subtle and that’s what makes him so good. I’m thrilled the director’s branch recognized him, and the same thing for Tom McArdle.
I think people are really responding to the movie. It’s exciting to see the Academy respond. It’s super exciting because hopefully these nominations mean more people will go out to see the movie and mean that more people will keep talking about the movie and journalism, and clergy sex abuse, as well as deference and complicity.
Nicole Rocklin – Producer – Spotlight Talking about her nomination and Spotlight’s nomination
My goal was to be working out but I was too nervous to get on the treadmill, so I was sitting home watching them in bed.
I told my son, he’s 1 1/2 he has to call me Academy Award nominee mommy.
The biggest people to thank, our cast and crew but really to the journalists, they have been our true partners from the inception of the project, all the way through to release. They are heroes and our friends, this is for them. We owe a great debt of gratitude to the survivors as well, and Mitchell Garabedian who is the survivor’s attorney who Stanley Tucci plays in the movie. Just this entire group of people who lived this and gave us, and entrusted us with telling their story.
Blye Faust -Producer – Talking about Spotlight’s recognition
My initial plan was to be home as I watched them and I couldn’t bring myself to do it. Then we started emailing and calling everybody. It’s a pretty surreal morning. It’s thrilling. We’re just thrilled for the entire team. It was a team effort to get here. Think about all the pieces and all the people, everybody is over the moon.
Award Recognition is always nice when people recognize the hard work. The focus on the awards recognition, if it gets more people to see the film and can affect more people’s lives, then that’s what our goal is. That’s what we’re focused on. We want people to see the movie, we want to affect change within the system. We want the molestation of children to stop regardless of whether it’s in the Catholic Church or in any other system. The systematic abuse needs to end and that’s really what we’re focused on.
Ennio Morricone – Hateful Eight
“When Quentin first asked me to write the score for his new western, I said no. But Mr. Tarantino is an astute man, and he left the screenplay for my wife Maria to read. He had spotted who is the boss in our house. Maria realized instantly what a brilliant screenplay Quentin had written for The Hateful Eight, and she told me in no uncertain terms that I had to do it. I am so happy that I did. To work with such a brilliant young director at my age gives me great pleasure. He was just one year old when I wrote my first score for Sergio Leone for A Fistful of Dollars. It is also a deep honour and very humbling to receive this prestigious award nomination for doing the profession I love. I receive it on behalf of myself, Quentin Tarantino, The Weinstein Company, and the whole cast and crew of this remarkable film. And of course I receive it on behalf of my clever wife Maria.”
Matt Charman- Bridge of Spies
I’m pinching myself to think that a historical foot note I found could lead to the most wonderful collaboration with Steven Spielberg and now to recognition from the Academy. It seems like a miracle. I want to thank AMPAS from the bottom of my heart for this nomination and I know James Donovan’s children will be so grateful for the recognition of their father’s remarkable story”.
David Lang, YOUTH
“This is one of the most exciting things that has ever happened to me. I am so grateful to the Academy for recognizing my work in the film YOUTH. I need to thank opera superstar Sumi Jo for her amazing voice, and most of all I need to thank Paolo Sorrentino, who had the beautiful idea to build a film around a song.”
Mark Rylance- Bridge of Spies
It is a delight to be celebrated as a supporting actor in Steven’s beautiful film, Bridge of Spies. I cannot separate my work in the film from the work of my friend Tom Hanks. Every thought, every look, every expression you are celebrating in my portrayal of Rudolph Abel, I found them all in the thoughtful generous presence of Tom Hanks beside me, or behind the camera, yet still with me 100%, every take, every moment. Of course you would witness none of it without Steven, nor are any of the choices of what you witness mine. The performance belongs equally to him and all his wonderful crew, who I am proud to call friends, as I admire them enormously. May I say, I am particularly proud to be nominated as a supporting actor, as I find the level of supporting acting in films these days utterly convincing and very often extremely moving, even the smallest parts.”
Lenny Abrahamson, director of Room
“This is an incredible day for everyone involved in ROOM. Thank you to the Academy for honoring us with four nominations — it’s beyond all our wildest dreams. It is a testament to everyone who gave so much of themselves to make this film happen. I am so proud of Emma Donoghue whose incredible novel started the journey, of Ed Guiney, my filmmaking other half who has been with me, driving the train, from the beginning with his partner Andrew Lowe and to everyone at Element Pictures Dublin, my filmmaking home, of the extraordinary Brie Larson and the prodigy that is Jacob Tremblay. So much praise is due also to Film 4 in the UK – Tessa Ross and now David Kosse, along with Rose Garnett, Sue Bruce-Smith and all the team for believing in me from the start and supporting this film. A24 have done an extraordinary job in bringing this film to the world’s attention and we owe them a huge debt – particularly Noah Sacco, David Fenkel, Daniel Katz and Nicolette Aizenberg. Glen basner and all of FilmNation and have also played a huge role in getting this film to where it is. I also want to send my love and thanks to Stephen Rennicks my wonderful composer, Nathan Nugent my brilliant editor and to Ethan Tobman and Danny Cohen, my extraordinary Production Designer and Cinematographer. I want to than my wonderful representation, Rachel Holroyd at Casarotto and Adriana Alberghetti and David Karp at WME, Los Angeles. Finally, this is a quite extraordinary day for the Irish film industry. Between ROOM, BROOKLYN, Michael Fassbender in STEVE JOBS and the short, STUTTERER we have 9 nominations. It’s the result of years of support by The Irish Film Board/Bord Scannain na hEireann. I hope this result will encourage the government here to continue and increase their support for Irish Film.”
Brie Larson / ROOM
“I’m unbelievably honored and excited to be recognized by the Academy, and even more thrilled to share this honor with Lenny Abrahamson, Emma Donoghue and the entire ROOM family of filmmakers, cast, and crew. I’m so lucky and humbled to be a part of this beautiful story, in a once-in-a-lifetime role. Congratulations to my fellow nominees. Truly, I am very grateful this morning.”
EVE STEWART – “THE DANISH GIRL” (Focus Features) – Nominee, Achievement in Production Design, Motion Picture – Academy Awards
“I am thrilled, and grateful, for the acknowledgment from the AMPAS voters. Our movie coalesced beautifully under the guidance of our great director, Tom Hooper. I proudly share this nomination with Michael Standish, and we are so happy that our wonderful colleagues from THE DANISH GIRL were also recognized.” – Eve Stewart, Academy Award nominee for Achievement in Production Design [Motion Picture] (THE DANISH GIRL)
PACO DELGADO – “THE DANISH GIRL” (Focus Features) – Nominee, Achievement in Costume Design, Motion Picture – Academy Awards
“Hearing my name in the nominees list this year made me very happy, and I want to thank the Academy for this wonderful nomination. My team and I are so grateful to AMPAS members to have thought that our work in The Danish Girl is worthy of such an important award. To be nominated is a massive honor, particularly among the other amazing designers whose work I profoundly admire. What a big reward! I also want to thank Tom Hooper and the producers for allowing me to design the wonderful love story of transgender pioneer Lili Elbe and her wife Gerda Wegener.” – Paco Delgado, Academy Award nominee for Achievement in Costume Design [Motion Picture] (THE DANISH GIRL)
ALICIA VIKANDER – “THE DANISH GIRL” (Focus Features) – Nominee, Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role, Motion Picture – Academy Awards
“I am deeply grateful to The Academy for this honour. To be recognized alongside these actresses and their inspiring performances is humbling. To be a part of bringing The Danish Girl to life was such a gift and to receive this nomination is a thrill.”
Simon Kinberg’s statement for his nomination for Best Picture in support of THE MARTIAN.
“We made this movie with a lot of love: love for science, love for cinema, a sort of radical optimism about human beings. We didn’t know if the world would embrace it. They did, and now I’m so thrilled the Academy has embraced it too.”
Jennifer Lawrence, JOY
“I am beyond grateful and humbled by this nomination. I feel incredibly honored to be recognized among the other amazing women in this category. Joy is an incredibly inspiring story about an ordinary woman who does extraordinary things. For me, working with David O. Russell has been nothing short of extraordinary, and I share this nomination with him as well as our incredible supporting cast. I could not be more proud to be a part of this film and thankful to the producers and Fox for their unyielding support.” –
Leonardo DiCaprio- The Revenant
“I am so grateful to the Academy for their recognition of this film. Making The Revenant was one of the most rewarding and collaborative experiences of my life. None of this would have been possible without Alejandro’s talent, vision and determination. Our dedicated crew also deserves to share in this moment. Together, they have created a truly unique cinematic experience. Congratulations to all of my fellow nominees this season. Thank you to the Academy.’
Jennifer Jason Leigh on behalf of her Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress:
“This is incredible news to wake up to. I am thrilled. I didn’t think the experience of working with Quentin and this cast could get any more rewarding….to get this recognition for this role is such a joy.”
Ed Lachmann – Carol
“I am moved by this nomination and recognition of my work in Carol and the work of my crew, the vision and inspiration of my director Todd Haynes. Thank you to the Academy.”
ROBERT RICHARDSON on receiving his Academy Award nomination for Achievement in Cinematography/THE HATEFUL EIGHT.
“I am deeply honored to be nominated beside a brilliant ensemble of nominees.”
Sanjay Patel Director, Sanjay’s Super Team
“It is a great honor to be recognized by the Academy with a nomination for our short, ‘Sanjay’s Super Team.’ This is an incredibly personal, but also other worldly, story that was as much a labor of love for our crew as it was for myself. Making a film about my own childhood, and exploring the space that separates a young boy from his traditional immigrant father, meant that everyone really had to trust my vision, and the result is a truly beautiful film. So I share this honor with the crew, my true Super Team.”
Jóhann Jóhannsson, SICARIO – Best Original Score
“It is a great honour to be nominated for the second time for an Academy Award for my score for Sicario. My ongoing collaboration with Denis Villeneuve has been incredibly rewarding and inspiring and it’s a great privilege to work with filmmakers of the calibre of Denis, Roger Deakins and Joe Walker and all the other amazing artists who worked on this film.”
Roger Deakins – Sicario
“I’m happy the film has been recognized. This nomination is really for everyone who worked on Sicario.”
Andrea Berloff and Jonathan Herman, writers of STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON and nominees for Best Original Screenplay
“We are humbled by this honor and are excited to be able to continue the discussion of not only NWA’s legacy but also the larger conversation of civil rights in America. Thank you to our talented collaborators – we are thrilled to share in this success with you.”
Brooklyn’s Saoirse Ronan regarding her Oscar nomination for Best Actress in a Leading Role.
“When we made Brooklyn, we had no idea of what was to come. It is the most personal film I have ever done, the hardest one too. I am honoured to represent this film with my friends – John, Nick, Finola, Yves, Colm, Amanda. This has all been a dream. To see how the film has been embraced has been heartwarming. Thank you so very much to The Academy – you are a group of people I respect greatly and to be recognized by you means so much.”
DIANE WARREN
“I am so excited about this nomination for my song ‘Til It Happens To You.’ It means a lot to Lady Gaga and me that the song has been recognized by the Academy and has also resonated so deeply with survivors of sexual assault, giving a voice to this movement as well as comfort and empowerment to those who have experienced any difficult situation in their lives.”
LADY GAGA
“This nomination lends a voice to so many victims and their families around the world. Thank you to The Academy for recognizing the movement of people who have come together around THE HUNTING GROUND and “Til It Happens To You” in the name of sexual assault. Diane Warren and I are simply honored to represent the voices of so many survivors.”
Best live action short film nomination – DAY ONE/director Henry Hughes
I’m so proud of this movie and am thankful to all who worked on the film. As an army veteran having served in Afghanistan I wanted to make a film that brought up the brutal complexities of war and I could not have done it without my interpreter who gave my words meaning in Afghanistan. Thank you for allowing me to use yours to tell this story. And thank you to the Academy for honoring this film with a nomination.
SANDY POWELL on receiving her Academy Award nomination for Achievement in Costume Design/CAROL.
I’m so thrilled with my double nominations. Thank you to all my peers who voted and big congratulations to my fellow nominees, Jenny Beavan, Jaqueline West and Paco Delgado.
Brooklyn’s Nick Hornby.
“The moment I saw Saoirse Ronan’s incredible performance in Brooklyn, I knew that she would get nominated for an Oscar, and that she might drag one or two of us along with her. It’s fantastic recognition for a film that we are all so proud of, and a tribute to the persistence and ferocity of my wife Amanda Posey and her producing partner Finola Dwyer, who got the film made after several years of struggle.”
Joshua Oppenheimer, director of THE LOOK OF SILENCE (nominated for Best Documentary Feature) Best Documentary Feature
THE LOOK OF SILENCE
“It’s incredibly humbling to be nominated again with The Look of Silence. We could not have made these films without our anonymous Indonesian crew, and our gentle protagonist, Adi Rukun, who risked their lives to share their story. While the genocide began years ago, it hasn’t ended for the survivors because the perpetrators still hold power, and millions still live in fear. The Act of Killing helped transform the way Indonesia talks about its past. The Look of Silence helped Indonesia express its yearning for truth, justice, and reconciliation. We hope this nomination makes this dream a reality.”
Best Foreign Language Film
Ciro Guerra, co-writer/director of EMBRACE OF THE SERPENT (nominated for Best Foreign Language Film) EMBRACE OF THE SERPENT
“It is very significant that Colombia’s first Oscar nomination comes from a film spoken in indigenous languages, which for us are also foreign languages. I hope that this wonderful moment becomes an opportunity for us to value and respect the infinite traditional knowledge of the peoples of the Amazon, who are the real stars of this film, and with whom we share the joy. It has been an incredible year for Colombian Cinema, which is young and full of enthusiasm, so my thoughts are with all the wonderful cast and crew that helped to bring this film-miracle to life.”
Tobias Lindholm, writer/director of A WAR (nominated for Best Foreign Language Film) A WAR
“I am grateful and overwhelmed. And I know that I speak on behalf of the whole cast and crew when I thank all the Academy members who participated in the vote. I have often talked about my films dependence on Reality, and I have to say that this feels fare from real. In a magical and dreamlike way. I want to congratulate the rest of the nominees who have made amazing films. And end by saluting all the witnesses of war that have made this film possible. Soldiers, refugees and relatives. Thanks once again.”
Jacqueline West, Best Achievement in Costume Design
I was so honored to be a part of The Revenant. It was a thrill to work with Alejandro and to reunite with Jack (Fisk) and Chivo (Lubezki). A special congratulations to Leo and Tom. And what an exceptional group of fellow nominees! I am truly grateful to the Academy for this nomination.
Randy Thom, Best Achievement in Sound Mixing
Alejandro Inarritu is a director with a storytelling ear just as subtle and powerful as his storytelling eye. We were honored to accompany him on The Revenant’s journey in sound.
Frank Montano and Jon Taylor, Best Achievement in Sound Mixing (nominated last year for Birdman)
It’s an honor to be nominated. The Revenant is a once in a lifetime film that you only dream about being part of. Alejandro’s virsion and passion inspired us all on this incredible journey in film making.
Chris Duesterdiek, Best Achievement in Sound Mixing
It is truly an honor to be nominated for our contribution. On location we really had to reinvent the wheel as to how we were going to get our equipment there and capture what was needed as well as record a catalogue of nature sounds from the environment. A big heartfelt thanks to the army of post sound people involved, Randy, Frank, Jon, Lon and the whole team. A big thanks to my team Charlie O’Shea and Candice Todesco as well.
Rich McBride, Best Achievement in Visual Effects
The entire Revenant VFX team is excited and honored to be included. We are so proud of our contribution to this movie and could not be happier that all of our hard work and artists are getting the recognition they deserve.
László Nemes (director, co-writer) who is nominated in the Best Foreign Language Film category for his film SON OF SAUL. The film is from Hungary.
“We are honored, excited and deeply appreciative to the Academy. Since the premiere of the film last May at the Cannes Film Festival, it has been a great adventure for all of us.
The close collaboration of a dedicated international cast and crew transformed the ambition of a first feature into a film that can now reach a wider audience worldwide
including a new generation that has lost touch with such defining moments of our civilization as the Holocaust. The significance of this movie and its nomination for Hungary and Central Europe, in a region and continent threatened again by extremes, cannot be understated.”
Bridge of Spies’ Adam Stockhausen regarding his nomination for Production Design.
“It’s incredibly exciting to be nominated for an Academy Award this morning. Bridge of Spies has been a wonderful project from start to finish and I’ve been so happy and honored to be part of the team with Steven. It’s just wonderful to see the film recognized like this today.”
Bridge of Spies’ Steven Spielberg, Marc Platt and Kristie Macosko Krieger.
“A cliché is the truth many times over, so to say we’re just so honored to have been nominated is the plain truth. On behalf of all our colleagues who worked on BRIDGE OF SPIES, we are all very proud to have been nominated for BEST PICTURE. To be included in such a spectacularly creative and diverse field of movies this year, makes this a nomination we’ll never forget.”
Richard Starzak, Writer/Director of SHAUN THE SHEEP MOVIE
“It’s mind blowing where Shaun has got to in the last 10 years. I’m very proud on behalf of myself, my co-director Mark Burton, and team Shaun!”
Mary Parent, THE REVENANT
“It’s so exciting to see The Revenant receive such recognition from The Academy and it’s such an honor to be a part of it. I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to work with such an incredibly talented group of amazing people.”
Charlie Kaufman, co-director/producer/screenwriter, Duke Johnson, co-director/producer and Rosa Tran, producer – Annomalisa
We are thrilled to be recognized by the Academy, alongside such a great group of animated films. We are grateful for the dedication and passion of our talented team of animators and artists, as well as our brilliant cast – Jennifer, Tom and David. Thank you to the Academy for recognizing our film.”
Drew Goddard, nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay on behalf of THE MARTIAN:
“I’m thrilled to be nominated and I share this honor with Andy Weir and our extraordinary cast and crew. I’d like to give special thanks to the man who carried our red planet on his shoulders, Sir Ridley Scott. Congratulations to my fellow nominees, and thank you to everyone in the Academy for recognizing The Martian.”
Finola Dwyer regarding her nomination for Best Picture.
“We are so, so honored to be nominated with such an illustrious group of film makers. It has been incredible to see audiences connecting so personally to Brooklyn. We would be nowhere without Nick Hornby’s masterful script, John Crowley’s impeccable direction and the luminous performance by the Saoirse Ronan.”
CARTER BURWELL on receiving his Academy Award nomination for Achievement in music written for motion pictures(original score)/CAROL.
“It’s an honor to share the original score nomination with this group of composers I so admire. After more than thirty years of film scoring, this is my first Academy Award nomination, and I’m extremely grateful. I’m also happy the Academy chose to recognize ‘Carol’ in so many categories. It’s a beautiful film made by a lot of creative people, and I want to particularly thank the director Todd Haynes, who brought this wonderful project to me.”
The Big Short Adam McKay/ Director & Screenwriter:
“So happy for everyone who worked on this movie. This was truly an ensemble project from cast to crew to producers. Thank you to the members of the Academy and to all the audiences that have supported The Big Short. Now I’m going to take a nap.”
The Big Short Charles Randolph/ Screenwriter:
“I’m delighted. I’m particularly delighted to share the honor with Mr. Adam McKay, visionary, troublemaker, Mensch.”
Ridley Scott, Michael Schaefer and Mark Huffam
“We are genuinely honored, delighted and grateful for the very generous recognition our film received today from the Academy. THE MARTIAN was a demanding shoot and a true collaboration between every single person associated with it. So to see so many of our team members receive nominations this morning is particularly gratifying. A deeply heartfelt thank you to all the members of the Academy.”
ROONEY MARA on receiving her Academy Award nomination for performance by an actress in a supporting role/CAROL.
“To be acknowledged this morning along with Cate, Phyllis, Ed, Carter and Sandy is an incredible honor. Todd made a beautiful and quiet love story with ‘Carol.’ I am proud to have been a part of it and feel privileged to have worked with some of our finest artists and one of our greatest directors.”
Brooklyn’s John Crowley.
“It is such an honour, and no small thrill, that Brooklyn was recognized today. Watching audiences respond to this film on both sides of the Atlantic since premiering at Sundance last year has been an incredibly gratifying experience, and today’s acknowledgement by the Academy is beyond our most extreme hopes. Nick Hornby’s beautifully judged and lovingly crafted screenplay was the departure point for us all as we made the film and he is so deserving of this nomination. And I’m thrilled that Saoirse Ronan’s astonishing performance has been nominated. It’s a defining moment for this brilliant actress and one I’m ecstatic to see applauded in this way.”
Jack Fisk Production Design:
The Canadian winter seems a lot warmer today.
Emmanuel Lubezki, Achievement in Cinematography
Going on this adventure with Alejandro and the team was truly one of the most amazing, challenging, interesting experiences of my life. It’s a great honor to be recognized by the Academy, especially amongst such a talented group of cinematographers.
Evgeny Afineevsky, Nominee, Best Documentary Film, WINTER ON FIRE
I am very thankful to all the documentary branch members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for nominating “Winter on Fire” for an Oscar for Best Documentary! For a kid who was born in Russia, raised in Israel and became an American filmmaker, it is an honor to be recognized for my work by AMPAS. I am proud to be an American filmmaker, and have the ability of freedom of speech and to be an artist with freedom of expression. I think today’s achievement belongs not only to me, but to all the people who were with me on Maidan Square in the Ukraine, during these 93 days of events shown in the film. To my amazing Ukrainian filmmaking team, who dedicated their lives to tell these human stories and document this history, thank you. To my great producers who stood behind me while I was putting the project together, guiding and advising me, thank you. To an amazing Netflix family team, who believed in me and helped me to bring the story to the people in over 130 countries across the globe, thank you. This revolution of dignity was a fascinating example of the unity of people from different social groups, ages, religions and nationalities and now this unique historic moment can be seen everywhere. Thank you to all my friends, supporters and believers, for entrusting and believing in my vision.
CAS ANVAR (‘Dr. Mittal’), “ROOM” (A24 Films)
“Room is one of those films that strips you bare and leaves you gasping from watching truth ripped from the hearts of two exquisite performers. Having The Academy acknowledge this motion picture with four nominations today shows there is room for authentic artistry at the highest levels. I am honored to be part of the core cast of this poetically crafted film from director Lenny Abrahamson, a brilliant screenplay adaptation by Emma Donoghue and truly privileged to be able to work alongside Brie Larson and the incredible young Jacob Tremblay.”
The Martian’s Paul Massey – Sound Mixer.
“I’m honored and thrilled to be nominated for The Martian. I’d like to congratulate everyone in our sound team and give a very special thank you to both Ridley Scott for his skillful directing, and Pietro Scalia for his talented editing. Congratulations to all the nominees, and thank you members of the Academy.”
The only predictions I had were Best Actor and Best Actress and was 10 for 10. Helps not to hate people I never met, and just look at performance at face value.
All these years later, I still think Fernanda Montenegro got robbed. “Central Station” was one of the only movies where I had to sit for a while and collect myself before I could walk out, and that was all due to her amazing, amazing work in that film.
Maybe a reaction to the fact the film barely played in theaters and was produced by Netflix.
I think Larson is a lock if the voters actually watch Room.
Yeah you’re right, that one is pretty close to a lock.
Leo is a lock.
He always does great work. But very stiff competition again.
I agree that Hanks’ consistent good work is taken for granted, he was great in BoS. Especially when you look at Stallone’s nomination, which I really feel is a result of him being surprisingly good, but not better than the other Supporting Actor contenders that missed.
Hanks is never going to be surprisingly good, everyone expects him to be good and he’ll probably get nominated only if there’s nothing showier (and not necessarily better) to nominate.
AGreed
I agree. I think the academy has come to take Tom Hanks acting for granted. Another case of a best picture nominee starring Hanks not garnering Hanks a nom but garnering a supporting for another cast member. It happened with Captain Phillips, Extremely loud…., and The Green Mile not to mention non BP nominees but Supporting Actor noms for Charlie Wilsons War, Road to Perdetion and Catch Me if You can. Basically he makes his costars look good because he is so naturally good.
Crazy year. Outside of “Inside Out” what else feels like a lock? I can’t think of anything. Maybe “Amy” for doc?
I think any film that outperforms in nominations should be taken seriously. My knee-jerk predictions-
Picture- The Revenant
Director- Miller
Actor- Dicaprio
Actress- Larson
S. Actor- Rylance
S. Actress- JJL
Original- Spotlight
Adapted- The Big Short
Editing- MMFR
Cinematography- The Revenant
Wonderful statement by Mark Rylance on his acting partner Tom Hanks, who in fact gave the best performance in the film, and by my lights, the best lead male performance of the year.
Ridley Scott not nominated in Best Director? Stop the madness immediately…
Thrilled for Charlotte Rampling. Is it too much to hope that she could actually win?
Ennio <3
If he doesn't win, I'll scream so much.
If Birdman hadn’t happened last year, Revenant would be the clear frontrunner. But it isn’t.
Lawrence and DiCaprio are up at this time? Both their statements have so obviously been written by publicists anyway.
I know that with Ridley Scott getting snubbed, on paper it is down to Spotlight and The Big Short (both delivered the kind of obligatory writing-directing-acting-editing nods), but I think The Revenant will win. My two cents.
that Ennio Morricone quote is just plain adorable.
So… you think if Oscars had nominated Idris Elba or Benicio Del Toro, that meant they weren’t racists?
No it won’t, because Leo
Mr. Ennio Morricone is so sweet, I love how he included QT, especially because he missed screenplay (unfairly, IMO)
