Watch the trailers for this year’s Best Foreign Language Film nominees.
EMBRACE OF THE SERPENT – Colombia – Directed by Ciro Guerra
MUSTANG – France – Directed by Deniz Gamze Ergüven
SON OF SAUL – Hungary – Directed by László Nemes
THEEB – Jordan – Directed by Naji Abu Nowar
A War – Denmark – Directed by Tobias Lindholm
The SF Bay Area will have a run of the Columbian film next month. But THEEB was already released here.
Having seen all 5, my personal rankings are:
MUSTANG
SON OF SAUL
EMBRACE OF THE SERPENT
THEEB
A WAR
I really don’t have any issue with the first four being nominated, but I can think of a number of films submitted for consideration (THE SECOND MOTHER, IXCANUL, GOODBYE MOMMY, RAMS) that were significantly better than the Danish submission–not a bad film, just nowhere as good as quite a few others.
I saw Theeb 2 years ago at the Toronto Film Festival. I thought it was wonderful. It would be a worthy winner.
I still need to watch Mustang and A War.
Son of Saul for the win though! Theeb was great as well. I didn’t like Embrace of the Serpent.
Are Embrace of the Serpent, Theeb and A War available to watch anywhere in the United States?
Mustang!! I know there is no hope for it anymore but my favourite film of the year !!!
