Update: the Cinema Audio Society has announced its winner – The Revenant
Earlier:
The Cinema Audio Society (CAS) will have their annual awards dinner tonight at the Millennium-Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles. The CAS is one of two primary precursors for the Oscar in Sound Mixing (along with the BAFTA Best Sound award). If you’re still confused about the difference between sound mixing and sound editing: mixing relates to the layering and harmonization of the various audio elements in a film (e.g., sound effects, music, dialogue), while sound editing pertains to the creation and design of sound effects. Or to use an orchestra analogy, sound editors are like composers while mixers are conductors: composers create the music, conductors try to figure out how to harmonize and balance all the instrumental sections.
This year’s nominees after the cut:
“Bridge of Spies”
Drew Kunin (production mixer), Andy Nelson (re-recording mixer), Gary Rydstrom (re-recording mixer), Thomas Vicari (scoring mixer), Bobby Johanson (ADR mixer), Chris Manning (Foley mixer)
“The Hateful Eight”
Mark Ulano (production mixer), Michael Minkler (re-recording mixer), Christian P. Minkler (re-recording mixer), Fabio Venturi (scoring mixer), Nerses Gezalyan (Foley mixer)
“Mad Max: Fury Road”
Ben Osmo (production mixer), Chris Jenkins (re-recording mixer), Gregg Rudloff (re-recording mixer), Thomas J. O’Connell (ADR mixer), Ryan Squires (Foley mixer)
“The Revenant”
Chris Duesterdiek (production mixer), Jon Taylor (re-recording mixer), Frank A. Montaño (re-recording mixer), Randy Thom (re-recording mixer), Conrad Hensel (scoring mixer), Michael Miller
(ADR mixer), Geordy Sincavage (Foley mixer)
“Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens”
Stuart Wilson (production mixer), Andy Nelson (re-recording mixer), Christopher Scarabosio (re-recording mixer), Shawn Murphy (scoring mixer), Charleen Richards (ADR mixer), Chris Manning (Foley mixer)
All of the CAS nominees were also nominated for Sound Mixing this year, with the exception of The Hateful Eight, which was replaced by The Martian in Oscar’s lineup.
CAS will probably be between Fury Road and Force Awakens. Fury Road is likely the consensus prediction, although Force Awakens can easily win here too. And then, of course, we have The Revenant, which won the Sound BAFTA last Sunday and may certainly spoil again here. Lest we forget, Birdman won the CAS last year, although eventual Oscar winner Whiplash was not even nominated.
If you’re curious, Statsgasm’s prediction model for Sound Mixing does not have the CAS as a predictor variable, so tonight’s outcome will not influence the model’s findings (which, along with the other 20 Statsgasm predictions, will be released in a few days – stay tuned!).
Maybe they feel bad they’re the only televised award that didn’t honor him last year – who knows?!
Of course. I was just hoping against hope. 🙂 And, you never know…
Who here would even thought that Big Short would take Make Up?
Or was that just a cheap shot, eh?
As worthy as Linklater would be as a presenter, I don’t see why the Oscars would invite him now, especially since he lost both his categories last year. … I cited the Globes, BFCA and BAFTA because he won their Director awards last year. Plus, it would be another way for him to acknowledge his gratefulness for last year’s honors. (I don’t believe he made it to BAFTA last year.) … And Linklater has a new movie coming out soon; the P.R. couldn’t hurt.
That’s a good point. We can’t know for sure yet how good or bad any of these other films will be. It’s nice to be pleasantly surprised. I have to admit that the first time I saw the trailer for MMFR, I thought it looked kind of dumb. Oh how wrong I ended up being.
Thank you! And I, you! 🙂
Whenever I’m aware that there’s an important movie out there based on a book (or that one is about to be made), I make sure I don’t read that book until I’ve seen the movie, because I’ve noticed I tend to enjoy film adaptations more if I haven’t, but not the other way around; having seen the movie first never spoils the reading experience for me. In fact, a lot of the time, it improves it.
The two most famous examples I can think of are The Lord of the Rings (saw the movie before reading the books, love both equally) and Jurassic Park (read the novel first, loved it, but was disappointed with some of the changes/simplifications in the movie, which I’ve only come to really like – though still with some reservations – after many re-watches, but still nowhere near as much as the novel.)
An update on who has won the TECH guilds so far.

Why is Mad Max not a lock for Editing? when it has won BFCA, ACE, BAFTA, and a bunch of critics awards for Editing.
That would be amazing, BUT, the last time a film won more than 10 Oscars was in 2004 when The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King was 11. Too much parody lately.
Itd be totally ok if it did.
Well, not necessarily. Every member of the academy gets to vote in every category. So, for instance, no matter that all cinematographers chose Lubezki (TR), the overall academy could favour Seale (MM:FR) and so forth for every award. If every branch decided the winners per category then yes, that would be the most likely outcome.
How do you know if the guilds are following or leading? ”The Revenant” got 12 Oscar nominations, and ”Mad Max” got 10, so they’ve both shown support in the tech areas. They’re going head-to-head in 10 categories. Neither has a screenplay nomination. But ”The Revenant” has 2 more nominations: for acting.
I predicted Star Wars for visual effects, but I am far from confident. I am usually wrong when I change almost at the last minute. ex: Captain Phillips in editing, American Sniper in Editing, American Hustle in screenplay
”Some were saying they rarely split those awards [Sound Mixing and Sound Editing].”
In the past decade (2006-2015), 6 out of 10 times, the same movie won both: ”’Gravity” (2014); ”Hugo” (2012), ”Inception” (2011), ”The Hurt Locker” (2010), ”Bourne Ultimatum” (2008), ”King Kong” (2006).
So the remaining 4 times were splits (Mixing/Editing); ”Whiplash”/”American Sniper” (2015), ”Les Miserables”/”Skyfall” & ”Zero Dark Thirty” (2013), ”Slumdog Millionaire”/”The Dark Knight” (2009), and ”’Dreamgirls”/”Letters From Iwo Jima” (2007). … (Just for the record, 2001-05 were all splits.)
I like you, too. 🙂
I am reading a book called Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk. Ang Lee is directing the movie adaptation, which is due out this year. It’s an interesting read about soldiers temporarily home on leave from Iraq. I am also intrigued by Money Monster, Silence, Sully, and a few others.
Gravity is interesting and a full-on cinematic experience.
What campaign? I don’t have a big problem with The Revenant winning because of its quality. Even though it’s not my favorite, either. I am just not predicting it, and I’m campaigning solely against the arguments of those that are. And not in a nasty way, except towards those that are nasty to me.
ONLY on the small screen, actually. And it’s gotten better with each re-watch.
I really don’t care for your nasty campaign against the Revenant. The 28th will tell all..
Have you seen gravity on the small screen. It is just ordinary …
I’d like to add that the soundscapes of Son of Saul and Everest were both sadly overlooked this year.
From a distance, films like Ex Machina, The Big Short, and MMFR seemed pretty-good at best. They turned out to be masterpieces. So I’m hoping for similar this year
Thanks! I would have been nowhere near as persistent had the ‘Revenant is winning’ crowd not been so infuriatingly repetitive themselves…
Exactly. Mad Max is winning that one, regardless of whether or not it wins Sound Editing or even Visual Effects.
My dreams as well. Then again, in my dreams Mad Max: Fury Road wins all 10 of its nominations, and even wins an 11th for its awesome and unique Music Score as a write-in vote. Again, my dreams! 🙂
You said it perfectly!
Whatever else happens this Sunday, Claudiu, you deserve a special award for most dogged comments on any topic (in this case, listening to the stats, which I happen to think is probably smart)
Agreed. Gravity was not only a technical masterwork, but an emotional one as well. I believe The Revenant was for sure the former, but not at all the latter. Too opressively nihilistic for my tastes.
That’s such a wholly realistic scenario, you might get all 24 categories right on Oscar night! Seriously, join a contest or something.
Revenant is winning 11, the guilds are tipping their hand
Gravity is better than TR.
🙂 Well spotted!
I also see that scenario playing out IF The Big Short wins.
Oh yeah, that’s right. Thank you Bohdan. I forgot about Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk.
I think The Revenant will only win four: Director, Actor, Cinematography, Sound Mixing
MM:FR will also win four: Costume Design, Makeup & Hairstyling, Production Design, Sound Editing
TBS will win three: Picture, Adapted Screenplay, Film Editing
And these films will each win one:
Creed: Supporting Actor
The Danish Girl: Supporting Actress
The Hateful Eight: Original Score
Room: Actress
Spotlight: Original Screenplay
Star Wars: Visual Effects
Except Max deserves both, easily.
What a crock of shit. Now guilds are just following and not thinking for themselves.
TR is better than Gravity . Don’t go there..TR will sweep at the oscars..
A split between Mad Mad and Revenant in the sound categories is a perfect way to share the wealth for both of these technical marvels.
Is that a lie?
The Revenant is not winning editing. After it lost ACE and BAFTA, not happening.
The Revenant wins Sound Mixing.
Mad Max wins Sound Editing.
That’s what’s happening.
You are delusional if you think The Revenant is winning 9 Oscars, not even Gravity pulled that off.
i got 500 on Revenant but lost in other catgories..
btw my biggest succes at GD:
Grammy 2016 = 2nd place
BFCA 2016 – 2nd place
But GRAMMY of all things ;p i know nothing about music lol
team revenant here but why would big short win makeup ?!!! spotlight and it hardly any effort compared to the others i tots get why mad max would on the other hand even if i don’t like the movie but i can appreciate the work put in by the makeup and hair artists and costumes
congrats THE REVENANT team , also thanks for explanation about the differences between both categories as i was wondering why the split as some were saying they rarely split those awards that usually go to the same movie
Best Sound Editing would be still for the MM:FR to grab
Don’t forget about Ang Lee.
Nothing is unstoppable…
This film is just unstoppable now
Feli, Yes! Thanks for reminding me. We’ve posted it now.
Predicting Revenant to win 9 oscars. Production design/ hair and makeup / visuals and Tom Hardy are my shock predictions. The reason for hair and makeup is because of the small category and DiCaprio continually giving shoutouts to his stylist. I just have a feeling now that everything is falling in place for The Revenant to sweep and take Mad Max’s locks. Its either that or gets snubbed and only wins in its 3 main categories (Actor, Director, Cinematography)
CAS award members are not voting at the Oscars…
Ryan.. Will you guys post anything about Hair & Make up Guild Awards? Would be nice to read about some love for MM:FR here. Hopefully this is another Oscar for MM:FR along with PD and Editing. Sounds? who knows?!?!
In my dreams it will Cinematography and Director as well. 😉
Wait, so the “too big to fail” argument was overplayed? Too bad because I was starting to take it seriously.
Yeah, that is a bit strange. Hopefully, they invite him for the Oscars, somehow.
Speaking of Linklater, where is he? Sometimes, they’ll invite the previous year’s winner to present to this year’s winner. He should’ve presented Director at Globes, BFCA or BAFTA.
This is why you rock Paddy. To be honest, I’d never even heart of CAS until seeing Marshall talk about it on Twitter. I was like WTF is CAS? Still, anything related to awards is at least worthy turning my heard for.
Yes, this sound win really seals the deal…
You’re welcome. (Sorry, I just noticed this response.)
🙂
I knew I liked you. 🙂
Exactly. 🙂 In my book, any year when a Linklater film comes out is a good year…
So The Revenant wins because of an order and not because of achievement? I truly believe that sound categories should go to Mad max, junkie XL job is by far more memorable…Now I see that Fox’s lobbying is more powerful tan Warner’s. Warner guys prefer money and audience over awards….
True. Plus, we’ll still get 2 films from Xavier Dolan, and films from Richard Linklater and Jean-Marc Vellee. Not too bad.
Yeah, that was my impression as well. But that doesn’t necessarily mean it won’t be a good year. 🙂 Just, probably, not as good as 2015.
From what I can tell, maybe only Martin Scorsese is a big name director releasing a film in 2016. Yikes!
Yay, The Revenant won here as well. To the doubters and naysayers, it’s alright.. The Revenant is winning 6 Oscars – Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Cinematography, Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing.. It’s over. Enough already with this preferential ballot crap. You very well know that instructions have been sent to place The Revenant at Number 2 to all the members who are confused to make sure that it wins. It’s a wrap.. 😉 The Big Short couldn’t even win Best Makeup tonight. Ouch…
I’m not good at following these things early on, so I really have no idea. 🙂 But, yeah, if I had to guess… probably not…
what if the Revenant is the one getting upset? is there a preferential ballot for the Sound Category?
Do you think 2016 will be nearly as good? I fear it won’t.
It really was…
We were really spoiled last year. What a great year for film. 🙂
I’m not confident to predict The Revenant for Costume Design. I went with The Danish Girl.
Well, I’d prefer it if Mad Max won more. 🙂 I thought it was clearly the better movie of the two.
Thanks Claudiu. I think the right think would be if both won the same amount. Share.
You are reaching, I’m predicting it after its upsets at the Critics Choice and Baftas to win Costume Design, yet it’s one of my least confident predictions.
Does seem a bit much, the way things have been going recently…
Thank you!
Boy OR girl, you’re an interesting contributer, and that’s something to be proud of! 😉
I have no idea if I’ll be right, but I’ve got Mad Max winning 6 Oscars right now. At this point though, I might be overreaching.
Thanks! The support I’ve received from some of the AD regulars tonight has been more than welcome!…
Mad Max is an absolute lock for Production Design and Film Editing. I believe it will still win Visual Effects in spite of its VES and Bafta losses.
Not to worry Claudiu. I’ve never thought you were a girl. Plus, I’ve always thought you were a good guy. 🙂
absolutely unfair scenario Mad Max ending up empty-handed…
Sound MIXING is completely locked for The Revenant now. We”lol wait and see how completely Mad Max sweeps the MPSE Awards, if The Revenant wins enough there, I may switch to TR winning both Oscar Sound categories.
Thanks Wayman. I’ve got to stay positive that it will work out for the better no matter what happens. I can’t wait another week. *ugh*
so the sound category is locked?
Yes I am.
I was referring to Goldderby.com, the name of the website I ALMOST won a contest tonight.
;(
Your ”Mad Max” prediction could still be Sound … er, correct. We’ll find out in little more than a week. 😉
Who knows? ”Max” was the fave at Cinema Audio Society … and it got upset.
Just looked at the GoldDerby pundits’ Oscar predictions for Sound Mixing: 19 out of 25 are picking ”Mad Max: Fury Road’ to win’; 5 are picking ”The Revenant” (and they include Sasha, Tom O’Neil & Anne Thompson), and 1 for ”Star Wars.” With ”Revenant” winning BAFTA and Cinema Audio Society, I imagine some pundits will switch.
I’ve got mixed emotions about The Revenant winning. It’s my favorite film of 2015, so there’s that, but I predict / Predicted that Mad Max: Fury Road would win the Oscars for sound. Hmm….
Well, Mad Max did win tonight at the Makeup and Hair Guild. So there’s something.
http://variety.com/2016/artisans/awards/mad-max-fury-road-makeup-hairstylist-awards-1201711287/
Ugh, really? I didn’t think the mixing was all that memorable. I even kept an ear out for it second time around. Max should’ve won this easily.
You mean upset in sound
Are you saying 4th out of 635? Wow
Let’s go, The Revenant; one final stick in the eye of brainwashed Disney Wars supporters… 😉
I’m mad at myself for not getting the confidence to bet my big 500 on The Revenant “upset” at Goldderby. Ah, well. 4/635 still isn’t bad. But how close I could have been to #1…. FINALLY!
Cassie from Skins.
FYI: BAFTA has posted on YouTube all the acceptance speeches from the below-the-line categories that weren’t broadcast on BBC (i.e., Sound, Special Effects, Editing, Screenplays, Production Design, Makeup). These featurettes also include a brief backstage interview with the winners. Here’s a link to ”The Revenant” sound team:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lokz1KsiA74
where are you Velimir? The Revenant party starting!! You don’t have to worry, they both picked The Revenant!!
Golden Reel hasn’t announced yet, but Max gotta be fave there.
Or maybe The Revenant is winning both.
So the sound cat split is happening
GOOOOOO REVENANT!!!!
Fantastic Win
THE REVENANT won
It’s not a model, it’s a system. And it’s only for BP. 🙂 I could probably convert it into an algorithm, but I see no point, as I can just leave subjectivity out of it and interpret the stats the same way each year.
Like I said, I only check out the stats (by myself) for the other categories a few days before the ceremony, each year. Until then, I have no official predictions in any other category except BP. I have predictions based on everything I’ve learned throughout the season, of course – even strong feelings in certain categories (not only the ones that are locked), but I can’t speak as to the stats until I do my research, later on.
can you tell me the results of your prediction model in all categories?
Thanks!
So I guess probably BAFTA, Velimir! 🙂
For what it’s worth, I just looked up the last 8 years for the CAS and the Oscars:
* 2008 – CAS picks ”No Country for Old Men”; Oscars (Mixing) pick ”Bourne Ultimatum”
* 2009 – CAS and Oscars both pick ”Slumdog Millionaire”
* 2010 – CAS and Oscars both pick ”Hurt Locker”
* 2011 – CAS picks ”True Grit”; Oscars pick ”Inception”
* 2012 – CAS and Oscars both pick ”Hugo”
* 2013 – CAS and Oscars both pick ”Les Miserables”
* 2014 – CAS and Oscars both pick ”Gravity”
* 2015 – CAS picks ”Birdman”; Oscars pick ”Whiplash”
http://www.imdb.com/event/ev0000175/
I repeat: I’m not a girl. (And: no idea until I study the stats again myself, next week, like I do every year. I’m not much of a stats expert outside of Best Picture.)
So, what do I follow – BAFTA or the CAS?
BAFTA has successfully called the Sound Mixing (and Sound Editing) Winner in the last 8 years. I am leaning towards BAFTA rather than CAS.
To the stat girls, is that a good or bad decision?
Thanks!
Let’s go, Force Awakens; one final stick in the eye of the Fury Road and Revenant stepfords…
Fargo wins the CAS category for TV movie or miniseries
So is the Cinema Audio Society a Guild award? … The Motion Picture Sound Editors hold their 63rd annual Golden Reel Awards on Feb. 27. Much too late to influence any of the Oscar voters. Here are their nominations:
http://variety.com/2016/artisans/in-contention/revenant-star-wars-game-of-thrones-golden-reel-nominations-1201689530/
Great, I’m sure I’m not the only one keenly waiting on this !!!
Inside Out is the winner in animated.
Thanks! It’s OK, I’m over it now… Made my decision – now it’s easy. I just follow the rules. 🙂 He can’t rope me in anymore.
“So long as you’re being respectful and not acting like some sort or superior-ass dick, then at least take pride in in knowing you’ve been behaving maturely.”
I’ve tried…
Shit! I’m sorry that’s happening to you. So long as you’re being respectful and not acting like some sort or superior-ass dick, then at least take pride in in knowing you’ve been behaving maturely.
As someone who has experienced ACTUAL troll/slandering on this website, from a VERY prominent user no less, within the past couple days, you have my sympathy Claudiu.
I’m betting TR for sound editing and MMFR for mixing at the oscars
“If you’re still confused about the difference between sound mixing and sound editing: mixing relates to the layering and harmonization of the various audio elements in a film (e.g., sound effects, music, dialogue), while sound editing pertains to the creation and design of sound effects. Or to use an orchestra analogy, sound editors are like composers while mixers are conductors: composers create the music, conductors try to figure out how to harmonize and balance all the instrumental sections.”
Best explanation I’ve heard so far! Thank you very much!
“If you’re curious, Statsgasm’s prediction model for Sound Mixing does not have the CAS as a predictor variable, so tonight’s outcome will not influence the model’s findings (which, along with the other 20 Statsgasm predictions, will be released in a few days – stay tuned!).”
Can’t wait!…
Re-post:
Off topic, but this is a message that should prevent many other such off topic comments from me (and not only) from happening in the future, so I hope you’ll forgive me for this one bit of (in my view, necessary) spam!
This Andrew situation has got to stop right now. He continues to ignore my arguments and just repeat the same bullshit over and over, and provoke me every chance he gets. He is an evil troll and, therefore, from now on, he’s on ‘ignore,’ in my book, except for the standard responses I will list below. Whenever he actually brings up something of worth (which he actually does, from time to time), my response will not be a reply to him, but a post of my own addressing his points, as though someone else had made them. If he replies to my comment, he will, again, receive one of the replies below.
I have better things to do with my life than try to get a broken record to stop skipping. I need to devote my time here to the people that make this site great, not the ones that take away from that.
From now on, the only responses he’s ever getting out of me are:
– ‘SLANDER’ (Whenever he claims I said something I didn’t.)
– ‘BROKEN RECORD’ (Whenever he rehashes the same old tired arguments myself and others have already refuted.)
– ‘TROLL’ (Whenever he’s being purposely malicious towards me in some way other than the above.)
– ” (Whenever he’s not being malicious towards me – which shouldn’t be very often – or I just don’t care enough to respond.)
– PLUS quotes (of whatever length I feel is appropriate) from this message, whenever absolutely necessary. Without any comments; just the quotes and the appropriate standard reply, as listed above. He’s not getting a single word out of me from now on that isn’t included in this message.
Make no mistake – he WILL try to provoke me again. Probably within minutes. And, in his infinite stupidity, he WILL think he has a chance of being successful. In that respect, he’ll be proven wrong swiftly and unequivocally. Fun’s over, troll!
I don’t buy that BAFTA didn’t get Mad Max, since it won four awards there. But I agree that I believe it’ll win the two sound Oscars. I think The Revenant will win here, though.
One way or another, in terms of the Oscar race, this award matters very little. As reliable as any particular group may be in predicting their corresponding Oscar, there’s no plausible reason to suggest that Academy members base their votes on what the precursors have chosen. There’s extremely limited membership overlap between CAS and the entire Academy, there’s much less general understanding of the specifics of sound mixing and editing within non-sound branch members than any of the other categories, and any notion that there’s likely to be significant similarities in taste between two such different groups doesn’t hold much water.
Enjoy the CAS results for what they are: sound professionals acknowledging their peers with their highest honour. These awards stand alone, just as the Oscars do.
I’ve figured it out. Mad Max will win the CAS and Reel FX and Oscars for Sound and Sound Editing.
Yes, this does mean that the BAFTA Sound trend of 8 years will get broken this year. I believe the Brits just don’t “get” Mad Max and hence it lost there. But the same won’t be the case at the Oscars.
(points to the very last clause of the post)
“(which, along with the other 20 Statsgasm predictions, will be released in a few days – stay tuned!)”
😉
Hi Marshall, not sure if I missed the answer, but are we getting the Statsgasm this year? I think you were working on it?
Excellent point about the Whiplash snub here! I’d honestly forgotten about that one.
Mad Max or Revenant but this isnt nearly as important as BAFTA. Last year’s oscar winner wasnt even nominated here, but won BAFTA (Whiplash)
I think this goes to The Revenant but hoping for Mad Max.
