The LA Film Festival announced that Ricardo de Montereuil’s Lowriders will be the opening film. Produced by Brian Grazer and Jason Blum, Lowriders stars Eva Longoria and Gabriel Chavarria. Grazer said, “It is such an honor that the LA Film Festival has chosen Lowriders to open this year’s Festival. From their humble beginnings to their modern-day status as works of extraordinary art, these aren’t simply cars…they hold the imagination of the people and culture that create them.” He added, “Danny’s coming-of-age story is one of a son, a brother and a visionary, and we cannot wait to share Ricardo’s film with the world.”
The LA Film Festival also announced that Ava DuVernay will be the recipient of this year’s Spirit of Independence Award. The award honors those who advance the cause of independent film and champion creative freedom. Past recipients have included, George Clooney, Don Cheadle, Charlize Theron and David O. Russell.
Ryan Coogler will also be a guest director.
Carolyn Castaño designed the official 2016 poster for the festival. Mary Sweeney, the Film Independent Board Chair said, “Castaño’s work reflects and celebrates her deep roots and experiences in the powerful Latina culture of Los Angeles. Film Independent and the LA Film Festival support and celebrate the diversity of unique artistic voices.”
The 22nd LA Film Festival will take place at Arclight Cinemas Hollywood and Culver City from June 1-June 9. The full line-up will be announced on Tuesday, April 26.
