Former Academy President Arthur Hiller has passed away. Hiller served as Academy president from 1989 to 1993 and also enjoyed a career in motion picture. His career spanned five decades with credits including; The Americanization of Emily,Love Story (for which he received an Oscar nomination), The Hospital, The In-Laws, Silver Streak and The Man in the Glass Booth.
In a statement released by the Academy, Cheryl Boone Isaacs, the Academy President said, “We are deeply saddened by the passing of our beloved friend Arthur Hiller. I was a member of the Board during his presidency and fortunate enough to witness firsthand his dedication to the Academy and his lifelong passion for visual storytelling. Our condolences go out to his loved ones.”
A native of Canada and longtime governor of the Directors Branch, Hiller was honored with the Academy’s Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for his philanthropic commitment to numerous charitable organizations, educational institutions and civil rights groups.
Hiller is survived by his daughter, Erica Hiller Carpenter, his son, Henryk, and five grandchildren. Gwen Hiller, his wife of 68 years, passed away in June.
