I have to admit I was not all that excited about Patriot’s Day but now I MUST BE because the two best composers currently in film (okay, John Williams though) are going to be recording the soundtrack. It was to their deep shame that the Academy did not nominate the scores from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (which is one of the all time greats) and Gone Girl. It was as though the secret club of composers let them in, gave them an Oscar, and then said “now go back to rock n’ roll because this is our territory.” In truth, film composers don’t seem to like crossover composers all that much unless their compositions sound like film music and not like rock music. We all know countless examples of this, starting with Peter Gabriel’s iconic score to the Last Temptation of Christ (if it was eligible. If it wasn’t, j/k).
Patriots Day is about the Boston bombings and probably about the heroism of those involved. At least we know that Mark Wahlberg is from Boston, and thus, he won’t have a problem nailing that accent.
