We correctly predicted drama but blew it in the comedy category. Honestly, I had a feeling The Lobster was getting in but ditched it at the last minute. I would not have been able to see Junglebook coming. Nice to see Hail, Caesar getting a little love, especially since Roderick Jaynes doesn’t exist! As for Hacksaw Ridge, looks like, at least so far, it’s good to go – two guild nominations so far, with SAG and ACE.
Generally speaking, four out of five of the drama selections go on to earn a Best Picture nomination. On occasion, all five have. It’s too soon to know whether these five will go but they’ll likely, at the very least, be in for the Producers Guild nominations where they have ten choices and ten nomination slots. The Academy shrinks that by half – with five nominations and a random number of nominees depending on how many strong choices they have in a given year.
