Hidden Figures took Best Picture, Best Actress for Taraji P. Henson and Outstanding Literary Work – Non-Fiction. Moonlight won Best Independent Film, Best Director, Best Writer and Best Supporting Actor for Mahershala Ali. Viola Davis and Denzel Washington both won for Fences. Ava DuVernay took home Best Documentary Feature, along with writing for a dramatic series.
There isn’t usually so much crossover with the NAACP – in fact, usually they stand in stark contrast from each other. Whatever the opposite of the NAACP awards would be that is what the Oscars are. They are to the white film community as the NAACP is to the African American community -that is how separate they usually are. But this year, there is a lot of crossover and they might, in fact, share some of these awards.
