The 2017 BAFTAs unsurprisingly embraced The Crown, but what happened to The Night Manager which only received one nomination?
Netflix’s The Crown led the 2017 BAFTAs (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) in the television-focused nominations. That The Crown received five above-the-line nominations (12 total) hardly surprised. However, the near-complete absence of the critically acclaimed BBC production The Night Manager did send shockwaves through the television community. After winning both Emmys and Golden Globes, The Night Manager only received a single supporting actor nomination for Tom Hollander.
Explanations abound, but perhaps The Night Manager felt too old to the nominating group. BAFTA rules changed with the 2017 BAFTAs, allowing shows to receive nominations if they have mainly British talent. That allowed Netflix (The Crown) to enter the race and compete directly with the BBC (The Night Manager). Another reason that surfaced indicated the BAFTAs proclivity toward period over modern day productions. In the Drama Series race, only Happy Valley exists as the sole modern nominee.
So what impact will this have on Emmy nominations? Recognition never hurts, but the correlation between BAFTA and the Television Academy is tenuous at best. The news seems very, very good for The Crown, particularly Jared Harris for his inclusion in the Supporting Actor race. He needed the support as John Lithgow’s Winston Churchill threatened to dominate the awards conversation. It will be fascinating to see if BAFTA recognizes the American Lithgow over native British talent for playing a British legend. Vanessa Kirby also receives a boost for inclusion in the Supporting Actress race.
In the International category, Stranger Things, The Night Of, and Transparent all received recognition, indicating broad support across the pond.
The 2017 BAFTAs winners will be announced Sunday, May 14, in a ceremony hosted by The Great British Bake Off’s Sue Perkins on BBC America.
