Amazon ordered a 2-season commitment to the smash pilot hit The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. The series received hugely positive feedback from its pilot run.
Marvelous Mrs. Maisel indeed!
Amazon announced Monday morning that it gave The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel a full 2 season order. It’s as if executives over at the streaming platform listened to us gush on this week’s Water Cooler Podcast and wanted to give us a reason to celebrate.
Back in March, Amazon debuted 5 new shows for their annual pilot season. They ask viewers to watch all of the new shows and then go online to vote for their favorites. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, created by Gilmore Girls’ Amy Sherman-Palladino, is easily the most likable of the bunch, and early reviews are overwhelmingly positive. This is the first time in Amazon’s pilot season history that they’ve immediately ordered more episodes.
Set in 1958 New York City, Rachel Brosnahan plays Miriam “Midge” Maisel, the perfect housewife who is supportive of her husband’s dream of becoming a stand-up comic. As he struggles to find his place on the circuit, she slowly starts to realize that she has the wit and skills to take the spotlight. Sherman-Palladino’s script and direction are sharp and precise, and Brosnahan lights up the screen. This is a truly star-making performance.
Joe Lewis, head of comedy, drama, and VR for Amazon Studios, released this statement:
“In her onstage debut, Mrs. Maisel killed and had audiences responding overwhelmingly with digital applause. Like any great young stand-up, we’re excited to see what she has to say next and for a long time to come. That made it an easy decision to order two seasons from Amy and her incredible cast. We can’t wait to bring it to customers soon.”
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel pilot episode is now streaming on Amazon Prime.
