‘The Crown’ Goes Home Empty-Handed at 2017 BAFTA TV Awards

BBC’s ‘Happy Valley’ won best drama and leading actress at the 2017 BAFTA TV Awards. ‘People v. O.J. Simpson’ received the international TV award.

The 2017 BAFTA TV Awards were handed out last night, and BBC’s Happy Valley took home two major prizes. Going into the night, Netflix’s The Crown received a leading 5 nominations among the major categories. However, many industry observers wondered how that would translate into wins for the series given the series American distribution model. The Crown, however, will likely see little push back from the Television Academy on nomination morning in July.

Adeel Akhtar (Murdered by My Father) won the lead actor award. EHis win marks the first for a non-white actor in BAFTA TV history. Emmy contender Phoebe Waller-Bridge won comedy actress for Fleabag. The People v. O.J. Simpson received the international award against stiff competition from Stranger Things and Transparent.
