Epix takes a stab at adapting Elmore Leonard’s 1990 novel Get Shorty as a drama series. Here is the official Get Shorty trailer.
I was a fan of the Barry Sonnenfeld’s 1995 film Get Shorty. However, looking at Epix’s Get Shorty trailer, it’s clear that life remains in this property still. Developed and written by Davey Holmes (Damages, Pushing Daisies), Get Shorty the drama series appears to adhere closer to the original spirit of Leonard’s novel. The film, of course, featured big Hollywood stars (at the time) like John Travolta, Danny DeVito, Gene Hackman, and Renee Russo. That cast worked for that era. Epix’s take, however, puts Chris O’Dowd into a role seemingly perfect for him. He plays Miles Daly, the hitman who becomes entranced by Hollywood movie making. Obvious differences between novel, film, and television exist, but the television series seems to capture the soul of the novel better than the film. Also, Ray Romano looks to be having a ball as a Hollywood producer.
All in all, this adaptation looks fun.
Epix premieres Get Shorty on August 13.
