Making the Case: Which Queen Should Win ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race?’

RuPaul’s Drag Race superfans Joey Moser and Jalal Haddad make the case for each queen to snatch the title of TV’s best reality show.

For the first time in Drag Race herstory, we go into the finale with a top 4. Each queen represents something different in the competition, and Season 9 has turned into one of the fiercest races so far. To celebrate the end of such a fantastic season (and also calm our nerves), we are taking a look at why each contestant deserves to take home the crown. Who do you think should win?

Shea Couleé

No one slayed the competition this season quite like Shea Couleé. Throughout the course of Season 9, Shea won four competitions, an accomplishment only achieved once before by Season 4 winner Sharon Needles.  Equal parts bougie and banji, from her hotdog hometown look to her club kid couture to her construction worker runway, no one dominated the runway quite like her. On top of being one of the most fashionable queens in the history of the competition, she entertained audiences in the performance challenges and charmed the judges. Even before the competition she was gagging fans with short films like Lipstick City and elevating the Chicago drag scene alongside fan favorites like Kim Chi and Trixie Mattel. Sometimes the obvious choice is simply the right choice.  — Jalal

Sasha Velour

That eyebrow! That bald head! I’m in love. My eye has been on Sasha Velour since we were introduced to the queens. Sasha is one of the most intelligent queens the competition has ever seen. Not only is she the only queen this season to not lip sync for her life, but she’s delivered clean and stylish runway challenges throughout the entire season. What’s your biggest criticism? Oh, she hasn’t won a challenge on her own? Let met tell you that she should have taken the fairy tale challenge (Princess Uglina was the most complex and well-rounded creation). I’m sorry Miss Coulee, but the Gayest Ball Ever title should have gone to Miss Velour. Drag Race boasts queens that deliver unique points of view, so why not skip over the pageant queens and give the title to someone a little unexpected. — Joey

Peppermint

No other queen this season knows how to put on a show quite like Peppermint. Whether you were introduced to her performance skills through her legendary live shows in NYC and Fire Island or through her crowd-pleasing “lip sync for your life” performances to Madonna and The Village People, you are guaranteed an amazing show. Younger fans may not appreciate her old school style of drag, but after entertaining audiences in New York for nearly 20 years, Peppermint knows how to put on a show without gimmicks and tricks. Instead, she uses her pure charisma and talent to command the attention of audiences. So, while the other queens are still discovering who they are as performers, Peppermint will be ready to rule the world as America’s Next Drag Superstar. — Jalal

Trinity Taylor

Full disclosure: I thought Trinity Taylor was basic when I first saw her. Pageant queens are a dime a dozen on RuPaul’s Drag Race, but Trinity is something entirely different. She is one of the most well-rounded queens the competition has ever seen. Glamour? Check. Comedy? Check. Shade? C-H-E-C-K. She has slayed every challenge that Ru has thrown at her, and when she landed in the bottom two, she flipped her hair so much that she DESTROYED her competition (even if Charlie Hides put up a tiny fight, Trinity would have knocked her out anyway). A pageant queen hasn’t truly won the competition on Drag Race, but Trinity should be the first. I admit when I am wrong, and I was so wrong about her. Holy Trinity indeed!
