Sony Pictures Classics has acquired the North American rights to The Wife starring Glenn Close. Adapted by Jane Anderson from the Meg Wolitzer novel of the same name, the film stars Glenn Close, Jonathan Pryce, Christian Slater, Max Irons, Harry Lloyd and Annie Starke. The film recently premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival with rave reviews for Close.
Close who has been nominated six times for an Academy Award has never won, and when the film screened in Toronto, her performance took everyone by storm creating buzz for the actress. Indiewire’s Ben Croll in his review said, “Close, on the other hand, is exquisite.”
The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw tweeted this performance was her career best:

In the film Close plays Joan Castleman, a highly intelligent and still-striking beauty – the perfect devoted wife. Forty years spent sacrificing her own talent, dreams and ambitions to fan the flames of her charismatic husband Joe (Jonathan Pryce) and his skyrocketing literary career. Ignoring his infidelities and excuses because of his “art” with grace and humor. Their fateful pact has built a marriage upon uneven compromises and Joan’s reached her breaking point. On the eve of Joe’s Nobel Prize for Literature, the crown jewel in a spectacular body of work, Joan’s coup de grace is to confront the biggest sacrifice of her life and secret of his career. THE WIFE is a poignant, funny and emotional journey; a celebration of womanhood, self-discovery and liberation.
“As a director, it’s been a true privilege to work with these gifted actors to make the script come alive in the absolute best way. Sony Pictures Classics is the perfect partner to distribute The Wife to audiences in North America,” said Björn Runge.
Sony Pictures Classics says, “The Wife” is an emotional powerhouse of an experience featuring career-best performances by Glenn Close and Jonathan Pryce. It promises to be a major success in 2018.” No release date has been confirmed for the film, other than the film will be released in 2018 with no qualifying run.
