The winners for the Art Directors Guild all be announced in three categories for film. All of the films nominated for Production Design at the Oscars are also are up for Art Directors Guild awards and those are:
The Shape of Water
Dunkirk
Blade Runner 2049
Beauty and the Beast
Darkest Hour
Naturally we would assume that the ones up for Production Design would have the best chance of winning but the problem is they’re up against each other. Darkest Hour, Dunkirk and The Shape of Water are all up for the prize and honestly it’s a tough call between them. They’re all excellent. I suppose that The Shape of Water seems to have the best shot here but I would not be surprised if one of the others wins.
No film in the fantasy category is up for Best Picture, but Blade Runner 2049 is up for Production Design, thus, I would expect that one to win. Coco should easily win for animated feature but Loving Vincent might take that, considering what went into creating the paintings used.
That leaves Contemporary, where we have a showdown between Lady Bird and Get Out. Both will go up against Logan, Three Billboards and Downsizing. I don’t know what’s winning here, but I do wonder if either Lady Bird or Get Out will. That might help a little to give us SOME direction. I think that Logan might take it and I only know that because my daughter made me watch it. Lady Bird certainly could. There was loving detail put into re-creating turn of the millennium life in Sacramento, as could Get Out with the production design in the second half of the film.
