HBO Announces Category Submissions for 2018 Primetime Emmys

Yesterday, through a Gold Derby exclusive, HBO announced the official category placements for their original programming at the 2018 Primetime Emmy Awards. Listed below are the official performer designations in the lead, supporting, and guest categories including past Emmy favorites like Game of Thrones, Silicon Valley, Westworld, and Curb Your Enthusiasm.

For the most part everything is as expected with HBO’s overall category placement decisions although multiple supporting players from both Game of Thrones and Westworld have made the upgrade from supporting to lead. Kit Harington and Emilia Clarke have now been designated as the two leads of Emmy favorite Game of Thrones after multiple nominations in the supporting races. With Anthony Hopkins no longer a part of Westworld HBO has decided to bump up Jeffrey Wright and Ed Harris to contend in the lead actor race as well after previously submitting in supporting. The decision to bump up members of these large ensembles is most likely an attempt to avoid vote splitting.

HBO also made the decision not to submit two Emmy favorites, Ted Danson and Sterling K. Brown. Danson is the only SAG ensemble nominee from the most recent season of Curb Your Enthusiasm not to be submitted. Sterling K. Brown had a recent guest role on the second season of Insecure and it isn’t surprising that HBO chose not to capitalize on his recent Emmy popularity in the hopes of Insecure receiving its first nomination. The strategy behind the omission of these two popular actors might have simply been to make sure that they didn’t compete against themselves as they both have major Emmy plays with other shows.

Unsurprisingly HBO decided not to submit pop star Ed Sheeran for his controversial cameo on Game of Thrones. It is worth noting that individual performers have the option of submitting themselves which might lead to more submissions for the below series.
