Awards Daily TV’s 2018 Comedy Emmy Predictions

It’s Emmy® time! Team Awards Daily TV gives their final Comedy Series Emmy Predictions in advance of Thursday’s nominations.

Following yesterday’s Limited Series / TV Movie predictions, the Awards Daily TV team pulled together their Comedy Emmy predictions. With Veep out of the running this year, the Television Academy is likely to welcome to new series into the main race: Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Netflix’s GLOW. Both series seem likely to heavily feature in the Comedy acting races as well. Currently, Team ADTV predicts both series receiving three acting nominations a piece.

For returning series, Atlanta‘s second season received even broader critical acclaim, and the nominations are likely to reflect that. Aside from series and actor, most ADTV members are predicting Brian Tyree Henry to win a nomination after presumably coming so close last year. Only Megan was the holdout, but with excellent reasoning. As she mentioned on this week’s Water Cooler Podcast, Megan references the more experimental nature of the second season that offers reduced roles for Henry and Zazie Beetz over the flashback episode as well as the infamous “Teddy Perkins” episode, which seems likely to win Donald Glover another performance Emmy. A writing Emmy wouldn’t be out of the question either.

Futures for HBO’s Barry and NBC’s Will & Grace reboot are less certain. Barry‘s Bill Hader appears likely to receive an actor nomination, but the series itself feels on the bubble. Will & Grace will likely see series attention, but a nomination for all four main performers is a very long shot. Supporting players Megan Mullally and Sean Hayes are more likely to receive nominations. In other return news, Curb Your Enthusiasm could see series heat, but star Larry David is much more likely to reap Emmy attention. Last year’s stint on Saturday Night Live as Bernie Sanders kept him in Emmy’s good graces.

And what about the critically acclaimed Roseanne reboot? Its troubled star’s Twitter rants kept ABC from publicizing it, effectively shutting it out of the series race. Only stars John Goodman and, particularly, Laurie Metcalf could rise above the recent controversy. Metcalf smartly refused to comment about the events on a recent Alec Baldwin podcast. After Metcalf’s second Tony win, Emmy voters are likely to remember the series through its most liberal voice.
