NBC’s ‘Timeless’ to Return for 2-Part Series Finale This Holiday Season

Don’t mess with the Clockblockers (the moniker for Timeless fans).

After NBC canceled the time-travel series Timeless—again—this past June, the only hope became a series finale to wrap-up the story and “save Rufus.” But even that seemed slim, when series co-creator Shawn Ryan tweeted news that “considerable economic obstacles” made a two-hour movie an uncertainty.

But after San Diego Comic-Con, when Timeless enthusiasts pulled money together to buy a helicopter with a banner to fly over festivities, it became difficult for NBC and Sony to deny these die-hard fans, and they greenlight a two-hour series finale to give closure to the story and—you know—save Rufus!

“We’re excited to tell one final chapter to this incredible story,” said Lisa Katz, co-president, scripted programming, NBC Entertainment. “A huge thank you to all — our cast, crew, producers and partners at Sony – who have worked so very hard, and to the fans who kept us on our toes and made sure we did our very best week after week.”

Timeless stars Abigail Spencer, Matt Lanter, and Malcolm Barrett as time-travelers battling evil organization Rittenhouse, which is trying to change key moments in history. NBC canceled it the first time in the spring of 2017, before fans rallied behind it and NBC undid the cancellation. Sometimes history repeats itself, with fans saving the day again.

“While we wish we could’ve made another dozen seasons of ‘Timeless,’ this is the next best thing,” said Ryan and Eric Kripke. “We’re thrilled to take the Lifeboat out for one last spin and bring closure to our story. The studio, network, cast and crew are all doing this for one reason only: the fans. Because they deserve it. Because the fans made this happen and we thank them for their passion, support and helicopters. So? You guys want to get Rufus back or what?”
