The latest HFPA in Conversation” features current Emmy nominated actress, Yvonne Strahovski, who stars as Serena in The Handmaid’s Tale. Strahovski delves into her experience being pregnant while filming such a mentally and physically demanding series, the timeliness of the series in our current culture, and getting her start as a young actress in LA.
On The timeliness of The Handmaid’s Tale in today’s culture, Strahovski says, “I’m in awe of all the women who have very bravely stood up and spoken about their experiences and it is about time… I’ve been through it myself. I came here very young and you get a certain kind of male attention that you don’t want and you, unfortunately, as a young woman have to navigate that, and it’s sad that we have to know how to do that… we’re talking about it and it’s about damn time and things have to change, and they are changing.”
Being pregnant while filming this season: Strahovski was pregnant during filming of episodes 9 – 13 of this season. “My husband and I got married and we wanted to try for a baby, and I remember thinking ‘oh god, what if I get pregnant while I’m playing this horrendous character on this show?’… I remember shooting a scene in this car and just feeling so nauseous. I was with Collin, our DP, and he thought I was sick and that I had the flu… I finally just said ‘I’m pregnant!’”
On her unusual pregnancy symptom on set: “I had a very strange symptom which is apparently a regular symptom that I’ve never heard anyone else have where you have to constantly spit. So excessive saliva. So once everybody knew I was pregnant, there were cups everywhere on set, it’s so gross but I had to, I didn’t have a choice!”
