How ‘Jesus Christ Superstar Live’ can earn three EGOTs

When the Emmy nominations were announced, NBC’s Jesus Christ Superstar Live! Received a total of 13 nominations.

John Legend received a nomination for his portrayal of Jesus Christ in the show and with that, he becomes one step closer to joining the EGOT club. If Legend wins the Emmy, he will join Whoopi Goldberg, Rita Moreno, Audrey Hepburn, Robert Lopez, Mike Nichols, Richard Rodgers, Helen Hayes, John Gielgud, Marvin Hamlisch, Jonathan Tunick, Mel Brooks, and, Scott Rudin. Only 12 artists have ever received the EGOT (That’s the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Awards).

Legend won an Oscar for writing the Best Original Song, Glory from Selma. His Tony Award came from the Broadway revival of Jitney, and he has won ten Grammy Awards for his recording career over the years.

Another thing worth noting is if the show wins in Best Variety Special (Live), then Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice who have collaborated on Evita, Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat and Jesus Christ Superstar Live! Will also reach EGOT status.

As Legend was an executive producer on the show, then this too will be his road to an EGOT.

Legend led the cast that included Sara Bareilles, Alice Cooper, and Brandon Victor Dixon in the electrifying musical when it aired on Easter Sunday. Unlike previous live shows, Jesus Christ Superstar Live! Was a stripped back version of Christ’s last week on earth before his resurrection. With Camille A. Brown’s choreography where she mixed in mix traditional social dances with hip-hop, the production was filmed at The Armory in Brooklyn with a live audience of 1500 people. The energetic show was filled with many highlights, but the most memorable was the end, as Legend was hung on the cross and as he was raised, the walls opened into a cross.

Notable shoutouts must be given to costume design and production design, but also to Hamilton’s Brandon Victor Dixon who stole the show with a riveting, goosebump performance of Judas Iscariot.

The spectacular production wowed a new generation of fans with this production. Emmy voters were treated to a special performance in June when Andrew Lloyd Webber accompanied Bareilles as she performed “I Don’t Know How To Love Him.”
