Gay Gasp! Cate Blanchett Is Coming for That Emmy!

The two-time Academy Award winner makes her American television debut with FX’s Mrs. America.

Cate Blanchett is on the hunt for that E in her EGOT.

FX announced that Blanchett will headline a new limited series about the movement to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment, but she will actually portray a woman who goes against it. Blanchett will play Phyllis Sclafly, a conservative who adds her voice of dissent to the amendment, but the series will also show perspectives of other pioneers like Gloria Steinem and Betty Friedan. Schlafly was vocal against the legalization of abortion and the gay rights movement.

Mad Men writer Davhi Waller will pen the series and act as showrunner. Blanchett, who will co-produce along with Stacey Sher, released a statement expressing her excitement for the project:

“I feel privileged to have this opportunity to collaborate with Dahvi, Stacey and Coco under the robust and fearless FX umbrella. I am extremely excited about delving into the material as there couldn’t be a more appropriate time to peel back the layers of this recent period of history, which couldn’t be more relevant today.”

Production is slated to begin in 2019.
