The National Board of Review will announce tomorrow and change the Oscar conversation. Just like the New York Film Critics announcement coming on Thursday will likewise change the conversation. The Gothams didn’t really, but did give a nice bump for Eighth Grade and First Reformed, with Toni Collette and The Rider potentially hovering around for critics awards in the coming weeks.
Usually the National Board of Review picks a film that will launch into the race in the big way as opposed to one that is already dominating, with the exception of juggernauts like Slumdog Millionaire. That means if A Star Is Born wins there, it could signal a juggernaut is on its way.
More likely, though, they’ll pick a film that isn’t as much of a sure thing, something that needs their support, like The Post did last year.
It’s really hard to guess how they will go, just that the way they go will carve a path for a part of the awards narrative to follow.
Here are our predictions, such as they are.
