Tomorrow, the New York Film Critics will announce their awards. You can bet that they will NOT do what the National Board of Review did.
If you follow the various members on Twitter you’ll know what they’re about. And thus, their choices should be fairly easy to nail down. Green Book, to them, is the Devil’s influence. It’s *BAD*. It’s Mark Harris writing a long think piece in Vulture bad. It’s white film bloggers and critics feeling uncomfortable while watching it bad. Snooty white film snobs posting shaming memes bad. And yes, some prominent black critics have chimed in with their thoughts on both sides, and really they’re the only ones who should be speaking on the issue of race and racism. But the New York Film Critics are mostly white. In short, it isn’t getting anywhere near the New York Film Critics. Ditto First Man (too white). But methinks BlackKklansman is way to the other extreme – this porridge is TOO HOT, which explains why it missed the Gotham and Spirit noms in the major categories. But just right for them is If Beale Street Could Talk, A Star is Born and Roma. I also expect First Reformed and Black Panther to do very well with critics groups. And The Favourite, I should add.
They will also want to some way, some how honor the many women up for awards this year. With so many in play there isn’t one name that has gotten the same kind of universal push that Greta Gerwig got last year. Probably because they can’t decide on which one to support. Marielle Heller for Can You Ever Forgive Me, Debra Granik for Leave No Trace, Chloe Zhao (though she comes the closest to a rallying cry) for The Rider, Lynne Ramsay for You Were Never Really Here, Tamara Jenkins for Private Life. I do expect a female to emerge somewhere in there for something somewhere. I just don’t know which of them will emerge as a strong frontrunner, if any.
You can predict how you think they’ll go in the form below. Here are our predictions.
