The all important DGA, or Directors Guild, will have their ballots turned in Monday, January 7, the day after Golden Globes weekend. You can bet that whatever wins there will impact how last minute members vote. You can try your luck at two categories – the first, Best Director and the second, Best First Time Director.
We’ll be doing a preview mid-week but probably you’re looking at Bradley Cooper for both Best Director and Best First Time Director for A Star is Born, Alfonso Cuaron for Roma, Spike Lee for Blackkklansman, and then probably Peter Farrelly for Green Book, and perhaps Ryan Coogler for Black Panther. Who should absolutely be there is Damien Chazelle for his masterpiece First Man. I doubt he will be, however, as voters, even critics groups, always want to be on the side that’s winning. Time will have to rescue First Man from the idiocy of this moment.
Either which way, give it a shot, Oscar Watchers, do your worst!
