This is the moment where you, dear readers, are invited to plead for the nominees you’d most like to see. Please refrain from pleading for nominees to NOT be nominated. If we see them, we will delete them. This is all positivity today. All of the filmmakers this year put everything on the line to make these films. They spent years of their lives trying to do their best work.
Here are mine:
Dear Oscar, hear my plea — do not ignore Damien Chazelle’s First Man. Box office should not be a factor here. Sometimes movies come out in eras that weren’t built for them. That is how we track awards progress – Miss Right Now, not Miss Right – but First Man is Miss Right. The moon landing alone makes it one of the best of the year.
Other nominations I would really like to see: for Green Book to outlive, outplay and outlast the takedown campaign against it, for Eighth Grade to be in for Best Picture, for Paul Schrader to finally get an Oscar nomination he so richly deserves for writing, for Netflix to at last crack the major categories (on track to do just that), and for Black Panther to take its well deserved spot in Best Picture.
I would say that I’d also love to see a woman in for Best Director, but voters seem unable to decide on that one this year. Marielle Heller or Debra Granik would be great choices but they’ll be splitting up their votes, I would think.
Okay, now your turn!
