Next month marks the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots. On June 28, 1969, the NYPD raided Greenwich Village’s Stonewall Inn. For almost a week individuals in the LGBTQ community rose up against the raid and the NYPD and paved the way for the modern day LGBTQ fight.
As we commemorate the 50th anniversary next month, World of Wonder, YouTube Originals, and StoryCorps have teamed up for Stonewall Outloud. documentary commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots in New York City.
Stonewall Outloud brings the original audio recording of Stonewall to life, in a documentary that features contemporary voices in the LGBTQ+ community — from YouTube creator Conor Franta to Olympian Adam Rippon. The World of Wonder-produced film builds upon StoryCorps’ long-standing commitment to recording the powerful and varied experiences of LGBTQ+ people. Storycorps’ original audio documentary Remembering Stonewall features first-person accounts of those who fought during the uprising and forms, the basis for this new documentary.
Producers and directors Randy Barbato and Fenton Bailey of World of Wonder said, “We believe we stand on the shoulders of our elders. Without their bravery and sacrifice, we would not have the freedoms we enjoy today,” ”In Stonewall Outloud it’s our intention for their voices to live on, so that we do not take what they sacrificed for granted and so that we continue to fight for the freedom and dignity of LGBTQ+ people all over the world.”
