Mel Brooks whose movie The Producers once had Springtime for Hitler and Germany … long before it ever got turned into a play and then a movie of the play, that is. The Producers, the original, like all of Mel Brooks movies takes you right to the edge, something sorely missing from so much of today’s very earnest films. But both Dolemite is My Name and Jojo Rabbit caught Brooks’ attention.
And he intro’d Dolemite is My Name (which he calls “Call Me Dolemite”) with his friends, the writers Scott Alexander, Larry Karaszewski.
It’s been a while since we had such a strong year for film all around, from dramas to comedies, to surreal films, films by women, films by people of color, films by women of color. There are just a lot of movies in the race this year, which means opportunities abound.
