Great set of winners. Especially my boy Paul Raci.
Yay for Riz!
But hopefully we are wrong. 😉
If so, then why do you think she’s having a hard time being a clear frontrunner? To me, she ticks all the boxes of what a best actress winner would be like. Yet…
Maybe she brought everything to the role as you’ve laid out, but perhaps not herself. There seems to be a lack of connection between her (the role) and the audience at large.
I just dropped Do Not Split today for very similar reasons.
I have seen 3 times and I’m
Planning to
Watched tonight , it’s simply amazing, what a role ! What a performance! Outstanding in every way
Mulligan’s very performance is the DEFINITION of “extra” brought to a film. I’ve seen the film five times and the level of originality, detail, intelligence, black comedy, pathos and terror in her turn is unmatched by any actress this year. She did far, far more than execute someone else’s vision. Those who love this film primarily love it because of her.
I would be very happy with “Do not split” winning – my favorite one in this category. But it seems like noone is predicting it – well, I can´t complain since I went with Latasha (because of BLM).
I really, really doubt, Colman is second or even third. She’s not over Close, and probably she ain’t over Bakalova, as well. Can she upset? Yes. Only Seyfried seems unable to pull off an upset. But it’s Youn, and the order of upsets is clearly Close, Bakalova and then Colman (overdueness – breakthtrough – deserving but recent winner)
No Man’s Land got some backlash for “daring” to take Amelie’s prize. It’s unfair, it’s a pretty excellent film and a deep satire that reminded me at some beats, a lot, of Billy Wilder’s “Ace in the Hole”.
I wasn’t impressed with NRSA at all. It felt very navel-gazey and self-satisfied with poor storytelling and characterization. I never understood the hubbub around it.
Maybe the movie will be talked about for years to come, but Mulligan just dutifully and skillfully executed Fennel’s vision. I don’t particularly see anything “extra” on her part that would make her performance one for the ages.
McDormand in Nomadland and in Three Billboards (an inferior movie to PYW) resonated more b/c she indeed brought something “extra” to the roles. That “extra” is her whole self being.
Quo Vadis, Aida winning something is fantastic – best movie of the year.
Thriled for Riz and Paul as well.
Great set of winners. 🙂
Steve Hammond is predicting Another Round, but he said that EVERYONE he talks to is voting Quo Vadis, Aida. The issue of course is it seems that Another Round is more seen and Vinterberg is beloved. You’d think that once it comes to international films, you would escape voting politics.
[EDIT: It’s *Pete* Hammond]
That is a very good and legitimate question. And I haven’t thought about it. The beginning part doesn’t really advance the character’s mission. It’s more the writer/director being issue driven and womansplaining. It’s one thing to avenge the people who have done your friend wrong later in the movie, it’s another to spend all that energy to, what, educate men?
The beginning is so entertainingly presented that you forget that it’s rather supercilious and irrelevant.
Aida won – yes!!! And Carey, and Riz (my favorite of the Oscar nominees) and so on… This went about as well as it could have, really – Colectiv losing (which I was pretty sure would happen anyway) was the only thing that didn’t. I knew the Spirits wouldn’t let me down. I may have picked Ahmed as a prediction here, too… (By the way, clearly, Boseman isn’t locked for the Oscar win, as I’ve been saying. I think he prrrobably wins and is maybe still marginally the stats favorite – not sure, with this new information -, but it’s going to be close.) Given the stats I just wrote about, the only ones I might not have picked would have been him and Crip Camp (might have gone with Time, but I’m not sure, because it’s been clear for a while that it’s a serial loser post-critics phase, like Kirby, and those are almost always the worst picks, it’s better to go instead with something who hasn’t been nominated much, so they’ve only lost a few times). So, no real surprises. Excellent! Can’t write more now. I probably won’t even have time to go through ALL of the stats in all of the categories this year, it’s so tight, I’ll have to just do the toughest ones and hope there’s nothing there to be missed in the seemingly locked ones (as there was with Bong vs. Mendes).
Oh, I managed to see most of the animated and documentary shorts. I see no good reason to predict against the consensus two, If Anything Happens I Love You and A Love Song for Latasha. (The stats say Do Not Split in this category – my favorite was Colette -, which I guess could happen, but they’re never clear-enough in the shorts to rely on with any great confidence, only one or two of the stats in all three of these categories are close to that level of accuracy – Do Not Split does have one of the stronger ones on its side, the 7.4 minimum IMDb rating for winners in this category, as it’s the only one over that, but I’ve heard there’s widespread racial bias on IMDb, so Latasha and Concerto might be at a disadvantage here and might have met the requirement had they not been Black stories about Black people. If Anything Happens I Love You – which I thought was outstandingly conceived and crafted and incredibly moving, especially for a short – is also the stats favorite.) Hope to see all of the live action shorts today.
I’m not sure if I should say so close to the actual awards but it was an acting award
Aida has a pretty good chance to win, not ZERO. I’d still put my money on Another Round, but Aida is about literal GENOCIDE vs a movie about some middle age dudes playing around with liquor
Which one? 🙂
I love Frances to pieces and her turn in Nomadland is brilliant, as I’ve said any of the other ladies nominated with Carey both at The Oscars and here were amazing this year but as far as I’m concerned Carey gave the kind of daring, fascinating, extremely demanding performance I strongly believe that will be talked about for years. Deserving doesn’t even come close to me to how much of a deserving win Carey’s was. To each their own I guess.
I also love the fact as I stated above that Riz won. And Paul as well… Sound Of Metal is among the best films I’ve seen all year.
Yeah I totally agree, it is one reason why, while I think Youn is easily winning I think Coleman is in second – because her movie is going to be more widely seen and is obviously loved.
Mulligan won undeservingly with far better McDormand,
but yeah, I’m happy too for Ahmed! 🙂
And Raci, of course! 🙂
No Man’s Land won over Amélie when the voting system was very different in a way that helped smaller contenders. This is a pretty different situation
I voted for exactly one of these winners. But the lineups in general were solid so it’s quite a good list
YES please!! Both HAVE TO WIN. Their work in Promising Young Woman and the film overall is about to be talked about for ages.
Love these winners overall but mostly I’m beyond happy for Carey Mulligan’s win for the bold, haunting, absolutely astonishing tour de force of a performance she delivered in Promising Young Woman. If Oscar voters rob her again of the trophy for such a career best, instantly iconic turn I’ll be hugely disappointed.
Anyone of the five ladies nominated this year for Best Actress would make for a deserving winner but none of the other nominees’ work is a match to Carey’s unforgettable masterclass.
Truly happy for her and Riz. Deserved winners to say the least.
yeah that too
It got what it deserved. Go watch 4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days to see the same story done right.
that’s one of the factors while I think Youn is going to easily take on Supporting Actress, I can feel that many voters would reject to see Hillbilly Elegy (because of the reviews) and Borat Subsequent Moviefilm (because of the tone and/or the politics), but probably will see Mank and The Father for being Best Picture nominees, and that would syphoon votes from Close to Colman and from Bakalova to Seyfried, leaving Youn stronger.
again, we’re commenting if they have to see all 5 nominees in order to vote. If not, they will just check Another Round because it has a Director nom and assume it’s the best of the bunch by default.
But if they see all 5 films, Aida has some beats that are going to call back to the 90s and plenty of voters will clearly remember the horror the whole world experienced when Srebenica’s genocide was discovered, and the feeling of guilt that spread.
it has the Obamas behind it.
they are coming.
Unfortunately, this is true. It’s not losing Actor, make-up/costume despite fatigue setting in (too late though).
GOOD!
I don’t think that back to back defeats mean anything but it’s good to see that there are awards bodies that actually award performance rather than narrative. Riz deserves it.
I have a bad feeling that Crip Camp is coming. It’s late surge cannot be denied.
That said, Mulliganm Riz, Raci, Haas and Rahav hell yeah! Thank you Spirits!
There’s ZERO chance of Aida winning international film. Well maybe not zero but very small.
It has not been seen enough, it’s barely made a ripple.
I think it’s extraordinary and head and shoulders above Another Round but this is not going to be an Amelie style upset I’m afraid
I am so glad Ahmed and Raci picked up something meaningful along the way and also on the same night.
No Man’s Land did beat Amelie for the Globe though. And the director nom stat has more weight. Plus Another around has more gravitas than Amelie. Tricky though!
Even if they “have to see them all” it will require them to say they’ve seen them all and in that case it is incredibly easy to lie… But I’m pretty sure they don’t have to either way. I agree Quo Vadis, Aida would win if everyone sees everything and also agree that there should be a requirement that everyone see everything but the problem is how you enforce that because if everyone has to sign a form to say that they have seen everything lots of people will just lie and if you make a complicated system where you have to prove that you have seen everything it may turn people off voting even if they have seen them all
Unorthodox!!!
Love it. Overall, great winners all around. Only Crip Camp bugs me – I thought it was mediocre… the first half is excellent and fascinating but lets down in the second half when it goes to the most corny, bland and mainstream representation of fight against the system and the skeleton is seen bare beyond the tight surface. But as usual, the ISA will have better taste overall than Oscar.
I don’t recall if all AMPAS members have to see ALL nominees in International in order to vote. If that happens, Aida wins by default and Another Round would be the challenger. I would make compulsory to see all the nominees to let votes be valid in every category, meaning, for example, if you didn’t see “The United States vs. Billie Holiday”, your vote on Actress won’t count. That would make the Oscars more fair and better, in my opinion, and avoid Crashes over Mountains.
Somehow, I doubt ”Ma Rainey’s” will go 0 for 5 at the Oscars. Interestingly, most pundits are predicting it’ll win more prizes than a number of the Best Picture nominees.
Quo Vadis, Aida? is on paper – I haven’t seen it – as undeniable as Schindler’s List, as it depicts how genocide was committed under the nose of UN Peace Troops in Bosnia-Herzegovina, in the infamous mass execution in Srebenica. The emotional punch, specially given that most of AMPAS members were already adults when that happened, and the echoes of the impact of the event are a punch that can easily defeat Another Round’s tonally uncomfortable take on alcoholism.
I’ve been smelling an upset for a while, and I think it is building up – let’s remember that we had a very similar face off with Amelie being defeated by No Man’s Land, despite Amelie being nominated for FIVE Oscars. The Bosnian War film won over a candid love story that stole hearts worldwide in 2001.
Straight Up should have won for First Screenplay not Palm Springs !
Ma Rainey went 0 for 5 tonight. But it was only eligible in 4 due to Colman Domingo and Glyn Turman both in Supp Actor. But this is not a good portent for Sunday.
Carey Mulligan was very good in a dumb movie with a stupid ending !
It was amazing film
I wouldn’t read too much into Boseman’s back-to-back losses at BAFTA and Indie Spirits. Frankly, I expected Hopkins, a British citizen, to win at BAFTA, and I suspected Ahmed might win at the Indies. Since Boseman has already won the Golden Globe, Critics’ Choice and SAG, Indie Spirit voters might’ve decided to spread the wealth and/or show their love for ”Sound of Metal” here. Not only did it win for Ahmed, but also for Supporting Actor (Raci) and Best First Feature.
By the way, ”The Father” was eligible for International Film at the Indies, so Hopkins was ineligible to be nominated for Male Lead. (”The Father” missed the cut, however.) Meantime, Boseman’s still the fave to win the Oscar: 27 of the 30 experts at GoldDerby are picking him.
If I’m not mistaken, only Nicolas Cage, Sean Penn (in “Milk” year), Marcia Gay Harden and James Coburn have lost Independent before winning Oscar so it looks bad for Boseman.
Not so bad for Davis and McDormand though as this year’s Best Actress is as messy as supporting races in Gay Harden’s and Coburn’s years.
At least how I read it the trailer is very intentionally making this look like a very different film than it is specifically to make the sorts of guys who need to watch it. If the trailer showed it as beingpretty much a romantic comedy for most of its running time but with a strong me too point to make alot of those people wouldn’t show up, whereas a sexy horror revenge fantasy is exactly the sort of movie someone who needs to see this would go to. Also, I actually feel like her going to bars is less about the guys than it is her proving to herself that she isn’t crazy as everyone told her that she was wrong and she really needed to know that she wasn’t. Alongside the fact that, yes she wants to teach people a lesson but guys at bars are just one small subset of people she wants to teach lessons to so the movie wasn’t going to be (and honestly couldn’t be) all about this.
I know so many people that before BAFTA had been saying Hopkins would win there, Ahmed would win here and Boseman would win Oscar though… Just based on who votes at these different awards. That doesn’t make this win insignificant it just means that there are reasons why these wins may have occurred, which may mean not cross over to Oscar.
Also god I wish Quo Vadis, Aida had a shot at winning foreign language film but unfortunately not enough academy members are going to watch it. That is just me being realistic.
It’s too indie for the big prizes. And too big for the small prizes.
At the very least one of them. That performance will be spoken about and debated on for years.
Two back to back defeats for Chadwick Boseman. Does that mean anything? Some also feel that if the Academy saw all the five foreign language movies then ‘Quo Vadis Aida’ will upset ‘Another Round’. I think that four wins here will repeat BP, BD, Fennell for screenplay and Youn for supporting actress. Mulligan also has a good shot. That makes five repeats.
cool winners!
Yeah but I more mean to give me confidence that people are actually voting for her – this easily could have been McDormand’s award and the fact that it isn’t gives me more confidence in Mulligan
PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN POTENTIAL SPOILERS: Can someone explain why Mulligan’s character in “Promising Young Woman” pretends to be drunk to be picked up by guys? The trailer makes it seem like that’s the whole point of the movie, that she then exacts revenge on them. But she doesn’t. And it’s a very small part of the movie that doesn’t seem to factor into the overall plot.
Shame voting closed a couple of days ago
Oh god I hope so, she really really needed this!
I have to prepare my medicine to read people calling Chloe Zhao as “Asian American” or “of Asian Descent” on Sunday, something she has been fighting against (https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/chloe-zhao-backlash-will-test-chinas-new-era-of-hollywood-censorship?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=social). But only after I celebrate her multiple wins.
Really, really sad. A fantastic movie. I thought that it had a chance in screenplay but it wasn’t showing up anywhere else at all in terms of nominations.
Cheers!
I could not have done this without you tonight!
A sing out and commiserations to Never Rarely Sometimes Always, the nomination leader that went home 0 for 7. A stunning piece of storytelling. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/1b8d89f6b2005a03b83265d4282bb7dcc7a88c7ce1c9225b6a1640e6178d106c.gif
