Warner Bros’s Dune marks editor Joe Walker’s fourth collaboration with director Denis Villeneuve. Their resulting work rocketed to the top of the box office last weekend while also playing on HBOMax, and when Walker spoke with Awards Daily’s Clarence Moye, the film had just been cleared for a highly anticipated sequel.
Here, in his interview Awards Daily, Walker talks about his multi-film collaboration with Villeneuve. That collaboration resulted in a key shorthand between director and editor that helped overcome challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. He also dives into the Dune moments where editing played a particularly key role — and they’re not the ones you’re thinking of. Also, Walker talks about editing with large screen footage in the mix, so very important for Villeneuve’s big screen vision for Dune.
Dune is now playing in theaters and on HBOMax.
