Putting your own personal story on film is a herculean task. Martin Strange-Hansen’s On My Mind is clearly based on something emotionally true because of how our feelings are affected by this short film. On My Mind is a story of a man trying to give a loved one reassurance that they will be all right. The film has been shortlisted for Live Action Short at this year’s Oscars.
On My Mind centers on Henrik, a sad man who stumbles into a bar looking to drink some of his pain away. He is about to make a very difficult decision, and he is inspired by the dusty karaoke machine in the corner. With some support from a sympathetic (and flirtatious) bartender, Henrik is determined to sing Elvis Presley’s ‘Always On My Mind’ before he leaves the bar.
Academy Award winner James Marsh talks to Strange-Hansen about his personal connection with the material and how he avoided sentimentality with an honestly told narrative.
