Robin de Jesús is so magnetic on screen, and he sneakily is given the opportunity to play a large gamut of emotions throughout Lin-Manuel Miranda’s tick…tick…BOOM! A lot of the dramatic heft doesn’t simply weigh on the shoulders of Andrew Garfield’s Jonathan Larson. The bond between Michael and Jonathan is tested, but great art comes out of pain. de Jesús needs to be in the Supporting Actor conversation.
So far, de Jesús’ big-screen efforts truly capitalize on what he is good at. In last year’s The Boys in the Band, de Jesús’ Emory steals every scene he’s in as an unapologetically feminine gay man, but his smaller moments make his performance the most memorable. In tick…tick…BOOM!, Michael represents a legion of gay men living in New York City in the early 1990’s, but he never plays him as a victim.
When I spoke with de Jesús, I had a hard time containing my excitement. He is one of the most exciting up-and-coming screen actors of his generation, and he is just getting started.
