The Writers Guild will announce tomorrow and will add a few more pieces to the puzzle. We expect all of the usual suspects but there might be SOME surprises, I figure.
As we wrote earlier, the films that have been bumped to adapted at the Academy will be in original at the WGA. This is true of Moonlight, and probably Loving. Both have been designated adapted by AMPAS. And it will set up an interesting match up between Moonlight and Manchester that will not exist at the Oscars. That also means SOME other movie will win in adapted at the WGA, giving another film a potential boost.
Original should be:
Moonlight
Manchester by the Sea
Hell or High Water
La La Land
Loving
And a fifth slot which could go any way – The Lobster is ineligible so it will not be there. I’ll go with Loving. But 20th Century Women could also land there.
Adapted is the hard category to predict – hard to say how they will go with Fences. I just don’t know if they will honor a posthumous writer or not. It would be an easy call otherwise. For now I’ll say it doesn’t get in. So we have:
Arrival
Silence
Nocturnal Animals
Hidden Figures
Hacksaw Ridge
Maybe Sully, maybe A Monster Calls
My No Guts, No Glory is that Captain Fantastic lands in original.
Marshall Flores predicts:
