As someone who spent many late nights as a kid playing Castlevania games on his NES (that’s Nintendo Entertainment System for you young ones – man I’m old), I have to say that I’m very excited that an animated adaptation of Castlevania is coming to Netflix. There was something ghoulishly magical about Konami’s long-running video game series, which not only explored and united the Dracula mythos from its Vlad the Impaler roots to the Bram Stoker mythos, but also integrated it with other supernatural creatures and legends of yore, providing a rich and expansive setting that nicely compliments the many action-adventure/RPG forms the Castlevania entries have undertaken over 30 years.
Netflix’s Castlevania will be an adaptation of Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse (one of the very best entries in the series) and has some serious talent behind it, like writer Warren Ellis (the creator of the comic series Transmetropolitan and Red) and Fred Seibert’s Frederator Studios, whose work includes Adventure Time and The Fairly Odd Parents.
Season 1 of Castlevania arrives on Netflix July 7th. Check out the first trailer below! (Major bonus points to featuring a Nintendo, cartridge blowing, and the 8-bit Netflix menu).
