Melissa Silverstein flew to London to celebrate Women and Hollywood’s 10th year. I’ve been online for almost double that and I don’t believe I’ve come anywhere near having the kind of impact she’s had. Her site’s brand, Woman and Hollywood, remained intact whether it was part of Indiewire or not. She is not just a tireless advocate for women — she is a fierce warrior for them, fighting every single day for women’s rights in and on film. She sets up challenges for her followers to imagine “what if.” Like what if Gurinder Chadha directed the next Star Wars movie?
Silverstein has always, uncompromisingly, put women first where many of us don’t. We do what we can but we slip into the norms that have been put before us.
So here’s to her. We give our thanks and our admiration.
