Just for fun. (Couldn’t we all use a dose of fun?) Close your eyes and imagine an unknown quantity starring Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Kathy Bates, John Cleese, Keanu Reeves, and Jaden Smith. Now pretend you never heard of the 1951 Robert Wise classic, The Day the Earth Stood Still.¬† Does the trailer look any better now? No? Ok, close your eyes again. Now how’s it look?

I try to have an open mind about remakes. They don’t cost me a dime, and one out of a hundred times we get Phil Kaufman’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers, or John Carpenter’s The Thing. (Or De Palma’s Scarface or Scorsese’s The Departed.) Horror and sci-fi movies pretty much beg to be remade every few decades because, face it, in 1951 Klaatu looked like he was dressed in Reynold’s Wrap, Elmer’s Glue and some glitter. Let the naysaying begin!
