For her work in Dee Rees’ ambitious, accomplished, layered, profound Mudbound, Rachel Morrison was given a trophy by the New York Film Critics Cricle. A miracle, when you think about it, since no woman has ever won there, nor has any woman ever been nominated for the cinematography Oscar. Mudbound, one of the best films of the year, is not really getting much love from critics – they blame it on Netflix, but I think, overall, they and the industry aren’t much up for films by women who are that ambitious. Or to quote Meryl Streep in Postcards from the Edge, they want you to be good — just not better than they are.
All hail Rachel Morrison. Here’s hoping she makes history at the Oscars too.
